When it comes to recruiting, is it good for the industry when the first word out of HR is "diversity" and not "talent?"

Does your creative department consist predominantly of people of color, women or *gasp* both? Are your ACDs, CDs, and ECDs predominantly POCs or women? To my knowledge, white men aren't the only people who have talent, yet somehow** they are over represented in advertising, and definitely in creative departments. So maybe those agencies specifically looking for "diversity" are just trying to redress the balance. Don't forget, when you're in a position of privilege, equality feels like oppression. Check your privilege OP! **somehow = racism. Surprise!

OP, I think the majority of the people who responded did address your question. Most of the people above feel that diversity in an industry dominated by White men is a plus. I'm going to weigh in and say that advertising is already a talent-first industry. The people who get into this business and thrive are talented enough to stay. Those who aren't, leave or at least don't rise very far. That's the same regardless of who you are. I personally think your question deserves pushback because it seems to assume a couple things: a) diverse applicants aren't as talented, b) HR cannot tell the difference between talented and untalented applicants when someone is diverse, c) HR will actively overlook a lack of talent if a person is diverse, d) talented White men are being denied access to jobs because untalented diverse people are showing up, and e) advertising will suffer if diversity is a focus. I'd actually be interested to know what prompted this question for you.

Definitely a white male.

Uh oh... we got a reverse racism dude over here 🙄

like

Seriously OP, please tell me you're not saying being called white is racist and being called male is sexist? 🙈

like

We have an abundance of talent in the industry so it's a default setting. Diversity, on the other hand... why does it bother you, by the way?

like

@OP I'm not disregarding your question, but if you were female or a person of color you would understand why it's a big issue in our industry. There is a lot of systemic racism and sexism in our culture, and in order to try to change that we have to make sure we're paying extra attention and not letting unconscious bias impact our hiring. Of course we're still looking for talent, but we do need to make sure we have a variety of different viewpoints on a team. Plus sometimes someone is very talented but hasn't gotten the right opportunity yet.

I loathe the assumption that a diversity hire is a step down in talent quality. Hello: It's a white male dominated/created industry. Meaning, if anyone is getting in or getting by because of their race and gender, I'm willing to bet that it's mediocre white men.

like

Diversity brings different kinds of talent. Different backgrounds = new thinking = more creativity. Win win win.

like

Wow, racism and sexism in a single response. Impressive.

As a woman of color, I would prefer HR lead with talent, cultivating talent, diverse talent. I want to be hired because I'm talented (not only bc I'm diverse). I want to grow and be mentored by talented people, diverse and white male - my career needs all the help it can get.

like

Strat 1, I disagree that talent is the default in the industry. You really feel like everyone you interview is equally talented?

like

Talent can be taught, can be developed, diversity can not. The focus on diversity in advertising is more or less a joke. I've worked at 5 agencies in the last 9 years and have always been the only minority in the room.

like

SC1, you can call me a purple antelope if you want to. No big deal. But if you're dismissing a comment, question, or observation based on someone's gender or skin color, that's where the -isms come into play.

like

Silly rabbit, yes its good. You know that business requires HR to seek great talent. What makes you think talent is being diminished in the light of diversity? We're in an industry based on creativity and teamwork... A team of varied people is an asset to our work. 😁 Friends, these are the death groans of white male supremacy. As women and minority group's share of the pie grows, these men are starting to see it as trouble on the horizon. It's their mediocrity being measured and I think it's delicious 😋.

No matter how talented people are, if they come to work with pretty much the same perspectives as you, then we are totally fx'cked. Diversity isn't just about fighting isms - it's about better work. So, yes, if we are to survive and thrive, diversity first. ´

like

Talent should always be the first thing you look for. Because it's the only thing that isn't racist.

@DirectorOP People who call criticism of the white male patriarchy racist/sexist can eat my brown butt. Y'all are gonna be fine.

In addition to what many have pointed out the problem is with this post or at least its wording, the U.S. needs to seriously stop equating diversity with racial diversity. Diversity is a much bigger and even nobler idea that transcends racial diversity! And yes, it's absolutely needed!

like

If advertising put talent first, there would be more diversity, because as I mentioned in my earlier comment, white men don't have the monopoly on talent. Unfortunately hiring people who look and sound like the people already in the agency (white guys) has been the priority. Now that the priority to include others, please don't act like this is unfair.

Why does everyone preach DEI but fail to recognize that people also grow up in different backgrounds and socioeconomic classes? Increasing diversity in these elite firms also means that you will be at team dinners with people who didn’t grow up with well off parents and experiences living in the finer things in life or enjoying the same things outside of work - but not all teams are cognizant of that in their social conversations and can unintentionally make those ppl feel different. End rant.

We are calling “sexual harassment” “gender bias” now. FYI

Was at an event recently. Seems like advertising really only cares about diversity as it applies to white women. I think this industry wants to stay white.
