When negotiating salary and being asked if you currently get a bonus, would you "lie" if it helps you to get paid more? Is this considered taboo and is there any way a potential employer could find out if you weren't truthful about your current salary/bonuses? Is it illegal if you were to accept an offer for that potential employer to question you about your previous companies pay structure?

I’ve always heard it’s illegal for an HR person to directly ask you for proof of your salary. I don’t know if that’s actually true but in my experience, none of the big reputable firms ask for proof. E.g. Wells Fargo, Deloitte. I’d say yes to saying your salary is more than what you’re actually making. If the firm you’re interviewing with asks for evidence, they’re likely not great to work for if they don’t take your word for even that situation. As a note, I’ve negotiated offers from 2 of the Big 4 and 2 GSIBs by stating that my current salary was higher than it actually was (within reasonable limits) and never got questioned on it.

I'm happy in my role/salary, find it rewarding and the right work-life balance. My friends however, are talented and awesome so they've been rising up in their jobs and so, have a higher disposable income. When we go out especially on special occasions like trips/getaways, I'm starting to feel the pinch. They've been understanding and even give notice when it's a special occasion coming up where they want to splurge. If I don't go, it's fine but how do I spend time with them if everything is $$?

I joined consulting from industry with a salary increase of 60% and in hope to work on interesting and challenging projects. It has been only 8 months. My old job was slow, bureaucratic and boring but I barely worked 7 hours a day. While I am happy that I am learning a lot, I am also pushing between 12 to 16 hours a day and working for a toxic client. I am worried I will burn out soon. How do you manage to stay in consulting for so long ?
