When people add percents to their resume, where are they pulling the numbers out of? Like for example reduced costs by $xxx, xxx , or improved performance by 20%, or increased revenue by 15%? If you’re just fixing tickets and working on product feature enhancements (what I’m primarily doing), where do you get the numbers to put on your resume from? I haven’t updated my resume yet to include my current and first job, so it’s gonna be the first relevant work experience I put on there

To tell the recruiter that you can add value. The the whole point of making your CV quantitative that’s why people add numbers and measurable stuff.
These days everything works on the data and you should learn to measure your work. To show your impact.

Did those feature enhancements saved some money ? Did it made the app more stable ? Did it made the app more fault tolerant or more available ? Did that big fix was recurring issue and you did rca or fixed the issue for good ? Translate those big fix in terms of higher number.

Honestly most people just make the numbers up, ballpark your effectiveness and turn it into a percentage lol

Normally I hate meaningless measurements, and most typical software development measurements are.

That being said, when you can find a good one, it makes it stand out more. I've got a couple 'improved job x run time by 36%' type items.

Good question, that’s something I’ve wondered too. I suppose you could use average number of completed tickets per sprint as one measurement. In the past I’ve noted completely new features that I developed, so that’s a good thing to show.

like

It’s always good to measure your deliverables even if you are not updating your resume. I generally do that in retrospective to even show my current employer how I added value. It’s easier for mangers to understand your impact if you put that in numbers. Simple.

How do I measure my deliverables, which consists of bug fixes and small feature improvements?

Most likely from monitoring software your company uses. I personally never did this(but I should) compare the latency, # of api calls, etc using the monitors in a given time span.

Ex: 1 month data monitoring amount of bugs you had on a specific service and 1 month of data the day it was deployed to prod. Get the % decrease in bugs post bug fix.

If it’s front end, use google chrome’s terminal/network tab to make comparisons before and after.

Mostly by being curious and a little creative at times. Curious by asking around / listening for more context on projects (e.g. during all hands or other talks), and creative in terms of expanding the scope of what you consider applicable to put on a resume. For example, if your company is lesser known, you may emphasize how it's a highly trafficked site with a huge customer base, etc, which is an indirect ways to increase your value to someone looking at your resume. Another tactic is to estimate things.. e.g. if you got a ticket to refactor a service, you can measure the impact of the changes you made - did it make things faster, more secure, increase productivity?

Hi All,

I am a full stack developer with 4+ years of experience. My tech stack is node, react, AWS. I am looking for a job change. So I am giving interviews for both frontend and backend. But whenever I am facing interviews, i am getting to know about lot of new things which I was not aware of which is making me depressed? Because I have knowledge of a lot of stacks but don't have knowledge of anyone in depth making me feel insecure now.

Just accepted an offer as a project delivery specialist. To be completely honest, mainly just took the role for the almost 33% pay increase and how much I enjoyed the team during the interview process. Curious about others’ experience (the good, the bad, the ugly 😅)? The project I’m on is slated to last 3-4 years and I’m not necessarily trying to “find a home” at Deloitte or the big four, in general.

I got referred for a consulting position and had my screening call last Friday. It’s been a week now and I haven’t heard back yet even though I was told they’d get back to me soon. Is this a bad sign?

I applied to work for my dream company as an EA and the interview process was going well. They loved me but did not think I was a good fit for the role I applied for. They did however think I would be a good fit for another role opening up in a few weeks. I expressed that I was open to the role but I have not heard back since. It has been about a month. Should I give up on my dream company or trust the process? I have reached out twice so far.

How do you all deal with the guilt of leaving a comany/ team? I have been working at Microsoft for 1 year now, and seriously considering moving. I find the code base to be very legacy and I mostly work on obscure bugs that I spend so much time on, mostly due to navigating this large code base and not having much docs to refer to. Hence I find the job slightly unsatisfying, and that I could learn more elsewhere. However, I love the wlb, the team and company culture. The guilt stops my applying.

I am just making a career change from retail to software engineering. I want to progress as quickly as I can, so i have looked at bootcamps. 12 week course and they help you with your cvs and i presume put you in contact with recruiting companies? The one i am working with has already let me down several times with their communication on what's expected. Its a lot of money to put up, but want a structure to work to.
