It is also not clear that the end state they envision exists. The science on antibodies and persistent immunity for Covid is still in its infancy. But there are many examples of individuals getting infected again, and the antibody half-life data that’s emerging suggests immunity is short-lived, especially for asymptomatic carriers.
Chief
To layer on- the fact that antibodies do appear to be short lived but that no one has been infected a second time is promising. I agree we don’t know long term impacts yet, so if someone was infected a second time it would be a big deal. That’s why I was very curious to see if a second infection had recently been confirmed or something in the first post.

To add to this: it also costs millions of people being sick, incurring untold damage to their health, insane hospital bills, an economic collapse far worse than being under quarantine, and damage to the US reputation on a global scale. Why are people so averse to just wearing a mask and mostly staying home!
Chief
@PwC3 why would they fire teachers? Are there no more tax dollars for salaries? Are teachers no longer needed to instruct students?

If you’re about herd immunity that’s cool - Idgaf - but you ain’t startin’ with my herd; start with your’s and let’s see how that goes.
Rising Star
Herd immunity is right wing’s street talk these days. They really don’t care how many people need to lose their lives before we can achieve that
Also, we don’t have any evidence that getting COVID means you’ll never get it again. Also, we don’t know what lung damage will do long term. So, getting it and “surviving” doesn’t really mean anything.

EY2 - weak strawman. No one is suggesting long-term lockdown and isolation. Lock down for real like we were supposed to do in March and April to get this thing under control, and then come out of it with masks, mass testing infrastructure, and robust contact tracing to trigger very targeted isolations without breaks to occur.
Chief
What viable alternative do you propose, and what evidence is there that we can expect it to work?

The point wasn’t to eradicate the virus

They all think they will live, but likely they will die.
Pro
Herd immunity doesn’t exist, people have had it more than once.

We discussed this above in the BSG post, but if you have new information on confirmed second infections please share.
Rising Star
1. there is no proof we can get to herd immunity 2. it would require mass vaccinations (with a vaccine that doesn’t exist) or mass infection (which would cause 3x or more deaths and cripple the economy)
Pro
You obviously don’t understand the concept of herd immunity. It requires a vaccine and immunity at 60 to 70%. We don’t have a vaccine to SARS or MERS but we’re able to develop sufficient herd immunity. Please refrain from commenting on things you don’t understand.
Chief
We don't have herd immunity for SARS or MERS. Jesus H Christ is there no end to the absolute bullshit people will spout on here?
And starvation, lack of food, and access to health care do, too. But Privilege doesn’t cares about those
Pro
Who is rambling on about herd immunity? You need new friends.
