It might be too soon to say you want to be a partner, but it is not to soon to develop smart goals for your career development. You deserve structure and to be able to set milestones which are indicators of growth. This might not include your ability to get business at your level. But it can and should include your ability to manage a project or multiple projects, keep your team accountable to the budget; your ability to teach and train your staff, etc. These are all skills that must be developed in order to have a sustainable long term career in PA.
I don't think this needs to be discussed. You haven't given them any indication that you're going to leave so they all assume you're interested in the firm since you still choose to be employed there. If you're talking about notifying them that you want to be partner someday, it's way too early for that. Those discussions don't occur until the Senior Mnager level.
So just stay then
What do you mean "year to year"? It's not as if you're on an annual contract. As AM1 mentioned above, work with your coach to set long term goals for yourself. Partners and executives don't need to be explicitly notified of these long term goals at this point in your career. They will figure out that you want to be there since you haven't left. Once you reach heavy manager/Senior manager the partners/executives will become more involved in setting your long term goals. For now, work with your coach to set these goals. Try and have quarterly touch points to evaluate and discuss with coach to ensure you stay on the right path and are getting the support you need. Good luck!
@Manager 1 - I am not aiming for partner necessarily. It just seems as if most people in PA go year to year. I don't like the roller coaster of being year to year.
