When working late (12am onwards) I struggle to switch off when I’m in bed. How do you guys get to sleep without your brain running through various iterations of slides ?

WOAH, this is some next level self-therapy. Love this idea

Don’t get emotionally involved with your slides

I don't work that late

When I'm working that late, I take solace in the fact that basically no one else is working and no one will bother me once I close my laptop screen. Anything that happens will be tomorrow's problem.

Yea if I'm working that late I ain't waking up before 9. They can kiss my ass lol

Seems like classic revenge bedtime procrastination

There has to be a point when you’re less efficient in the slides you’re making or the analytics you’re doing. If you’re a night owl and love doing work at this time, more power to you.

For me, any time past 8, I ask myself, am I being efficient or in the zone, or is the level of work I’m doing roughly the same if I had a million distractions. If I’m not in the zone, I’m going to bed or doing something else. I give myself at least 30 mins to unwind (either do a quick workout, shower or some pot) and then go to bed.

We’re not saving lives. No reason for you to be working that late if you truly don’t want to be. If it’s a deadline you’re up against, now is the time to learn some time management. If it’s an unreasonable project manager/lead/client, speak with your manager about the behavior you can’t control, how you’re dealing with it and set boundaries to when you work.

Damn bro I finish working a quarter of a day before you lol

Encourage you to focus more on your client and less on the slideware - PPT is a nice wrapper but it really isn’t a big deal…

Wear blue light glasses. Trusssssst.

1.5 hrs between closed laptop and head hits the pillow.

^ this. I work late with the understanding that it will minimally take one hour after I shut my laptop to calm my mind enough to fall asleep. Even if I take melatonin and fall asleep, I have stressful anxiety ridden sleep and/or sleep paralysis so calming my mind down by reading, talking to friends, etc is very important for me

like

I've realized I simply need time between closing my laptop and sleep. It's a biological necessity. Obviously there are things you can try to do to avoid having to work until midnight (like pushing back on your manager and telling them you'll finish in the morning, etc.).

If you really MUST work at midnight, consider logging off early, going to sleep on time, and then waking up early to finish up. You'll be fresher and more productive in the morning when working and you'll have higher quality sleep (even if same # of hours).

I read a book in bed to distract my mind and fall asleep in minutes.

Thanks folk - the comment re thinking about slides was more an example and not possible to work more “efficient” and finish earlier but comments on emailing self and calm helpful

Can't sleep till 3 AM everyday 😔

Got an offer for Atlassian Canada - senior product manager. Initial offer is 160k base +15% annual bonus (24k) + 20k sign on bonus. RSU is 220k USD payable over next 4 years. There's no RRSP match (401k match equivalent). Considering its Atlassian, and current market rate, I think base is low. I would like it to be bumped upto to 180k. The recruiter earlier said the top of the pay range is 165k, which I feel is not really top but maybe median? Help me negotiate please; historically suck at it.

Having lost my father in a sudden manner recently, I am trying to cope and process the grief.
