When would you buy a Chanel bag, if ever ? Age and salary wise

When I was making 70-80k I was rly into the “not making a lot but wanted to seem so” kinda mindset so I bought a chanel every year with my bonus 10% of base. Had the mini 255, vanity case and some wallets/cardholders. Didn’t rly end up using half of them, the vanity case I wanted for many years so I still love it and I use a cardholder but I would say now that I’m at 250k tc, I wouldn’t buy one anymore. Chanel/hermes they are all beautiful but personally now that I know I can earn money, I don’t need brands to up my self worth like I used to. This is just me tho, kind of I insecure (coming from boarding school with a lot of rich kids I always felt singled out). I would say if you really love a bag and you know you will use it for many years, getting one is not that big of a deal.

likehelpful

This - buy it because you love it, not because you have something to prove. It can be hard to get to that point, but it’s nice when you do. To me, that’s the definition of true success - you can be who you are and don’t feel pressured to align to someone else’s idea of who you should be or what you should own/wear/etc.

I always wanted one, it’s just such a timeless, luxurious brand! However, the older I get, other things become more important and I’m like, “who needs this ridiculous bag?” I bought a gorgeous LV in Paris from their flagship store 6 years ago and have honestly carried it only a handful of times. It’s not that exciting to have it once you actually own it. If you do buy one, I’d echo what others have said. Buy it in the UK where your money will go further. I do believe Chanel is an investment piece and I don’t think you’ll lose money on it.. plus if you really want one, life is too short. Just get it! For reference, I’m 36 and make $150k

Honestly I love designer clothes, shoes, bags. But when I got a bit older I realized financial independence was way more important to me. We make less than men and spend our money on this stuff and it keeps us dependent. Invest your money. Make it work for you. Be free.

likeupliftingsmart

Amen I felt this way when I got older. I could totally afford it but why?! Given how much importance I’ve given this in the past I’m quite shocked I just don’t care for it now. I use a goyard tote for everything and hate switching it out. Makes it harder for my SO because I just don’t appreciate this kinda stuff like I did. Invest invest invest.

I got it when I made about 200k, and kinda regretted it. It looks nice but its meaningless to me. If you want to buy it here is a tip to save 20%off. When you are vacationing in Europe, catch a return flight from Heathow in London. Flights that are headed to US, allow American passport holders to purchase various luxury items for a lower price (and I’m not just talking about tax, it’s literally a dif price). For example, at Chanel you save about 20% off in total compared to total price for same item in US, at Louis Vuitton it was about 30-40% less, watch stores too. Heathrow also has shopping assistants for free, they can tell you which stores give lower price to Americans, they carry your shopping bags, accompany you shopping etc. As long as you have a purchased ticket, you can even call the store in advance to ask for the price. I finally understood why all the luxury stores were always packed. If you want baller treatment - You can reserve a private shopping room where they bring any item you want from any store (worth it if you’re spending a lot and don’t have time).

Second ey5, i got dior at almost 15% off due to the discount AND tax free specifically for dior

27, 175k base with bonuses between 0-300% depending on the year (I’m in sales). I buy fakes and walked into the Chanel store and the SA even commented on which store I purchased it from. 🥸

I got the bougie thing out of my system by getting some Chanel lipstick. If I really wanted one, I’d go find a sugar daddy and have him buy it- that’s how all the other girls get theirs ;)

I am so fascinated that people on this bowl actually throw down for these. Admittedly I’m not into in bags, but they’re SO expensive. Like… I didn’t even realize designer bags ran to this much!

like

Same. I truly don’t understand the craze with designer bags. The markup on it seems insane.

like

Kate spade and Michael Kors does the job for me for so much cheaper

like

Exactly! Even Michael kors bag is a treat for me..haha. I just can't wrap my head around spending this much on a bag 🥴

Literally never

34 YO. Salary: $325k - I can’t bring myself to buy one, and I have 3 higher end bags from other luxury brands that range closer to 1.5K-2K (YSL, Gucci, Mulberry). But $6K+ on a handbag is more than I could bear to spend. Its weird because I would sooner spend that on an awesome vacation - which besides the memories has not residual financial value 🤷🏻‍♀️

like

that’s more where I’m at personally (would rather spend on a nice vacation than an item) but I get that everyone is different with their splurges 😊

like

What?!?! Why? Buy a house instead, more useful, will always appreciate in value, and keeps the rain off your head.

Lol!!! Exactly K6, my thoughts on this whole topic

like

I see the point 😊 it’s Chanel, and it’s not just a bag it’s an investment in a luxury brand, plus and awesome gift to yourself. 32 (this year), 160k, I’d get the boy medium.

E2, Shhhhhh...don’t tell them all our secrets. Let them keep signing mortgage loans.

I’d rather go on vacation.

Some people can do both.

I’m 33, 110k base, saving for a Jumbo Flap. I’m single with no kids, travel as I want to, have savings and investments, and I have loved the classic look of this bag for a very long time. I wouldn’t go into debt over a bag but if my bills are paid, I don’t see the issue.

Those who shared the post … can you at least like it too 🤔😂

A lot of haters on this thread 🤣

Another price increase??? Chanel is out of control…. Highly suggest buying in EU if you are going to buy, I spent about $1500 less there compare to in US

Chanel has been doing twice a year

Kate Spade has never let me down

likefunny

This price is honestly ranging closer to Hermes. I rather save up for hermes for better quality than chanel. I can accept bags in 1000s-2000s and even bought one at 4000s but a 7000 bag is another story

like

Same. $2,500 is probably my max. I like to spend my money on a nice balance of things and experiences.

like

No. Never. Not even if I earned millions each year. 😳

likefunny

Never. But I rarely even carry a purse so clearly I’m not the target market.

like

Cities have become too dangerous to carry a purse, much less an expensive one! Muggers are yanking iphones from people in Chicago simply walking down Michigan Ave.

like

Never. I'd rather put the money into index funds.

like

Never. I have way better ideas for things to do with my money than to spend it on a purse.

How important is it to workout with a trainer if you have weak joints/cant do a high impact exercise. I did nothing for a yr - now my knees hurt, my butt burns while sitting, my ankles crack, the list goes on... I tried physical therapy but the 4 sessions I went to - I mean not worth the $100+ that I had to pay (post insurance). At this point, I'm wondering if it makes sense to get a personal trainer and to ease the transition back to a somewhat consistent workout schedule. Fully vaxxed btw...

How do you deal with a partner who makes you feel terrible about not just your work but yourself? This is a female partner who is older and a leader in her practice area. She comments on how I speak and it veers into personal criticism. Anything I offer to a project she shuts down, but if her favored paralegal says the same thing, she publicly praises her. I feel like they tag team me and unfortunately I can't completely stop working with them.

I’ve long disliked the term ethics. Definitions of ethics all refer to morals. Morals are very personal and vary a lot from person to person, culture to culture. Law is how we as a society express our preferences and impose rules and restrictions on ourselves. So the question should never be about whether companies can be ethical. What does that mean? One person thinks eating meat is unethical, another thinks it’s perfectly ethical. Companies should focus on complying with the law.

Here’s a reminder for my perfectionists, first/second years, and those of us questioning if we’re doing enough. Your lessons do not need to be incredible this year. Fall back on some of your favorites, do what you can, and make sure you’re allocating time for yourself everyday. Yes everyday or else you will go insane. End each day by saying you did your best and no matter what mistakes you make or if lessons flop, try again the next day. You. Are. Human.
