Would you take a pay cut from biglaw market salary—working as a generalist in a secondary market—to move to NYC to work at an AmLaw 200 firm for a $215,000 salary where “the vast majority but not all” of your work would be in your desired niche practice area? This is for a mid-level associate. Originally led to believe it would have been 100% doing the desired niche practice area; post-offer it’s now “the vast majority.”

Im totally stuck at work; my boss has stopped me from growing (not allowing me to try new things like sit in on mediation, attend depos or hearings or write different pleadings) and is constantly criticizing me. I want to make myself as attractive to other firms as possible but I feel limited in my skill set since I’m limited at work. What other ways can I gain skills at work? Write articles? Join a bar association?

Do you have to invite people from your office to your wedding? I work at a very small office with out 12 people total, including staff. The other associate here invited everyone in the office, and their significant others to her wedding. That's a lot of extra money I wasn't intending to spend for people I'm not particularly close to. Is there any point in being a star associate in your first few years (1-3)? There’s no real financial incentive at my firm. Seems like the only reward is more work and keeping up expectations. Have you seen an average associates turn out to be “stars” later on? How about lateraling and starting fresh at senior associate/5th year?

Is GC a better job than law firm partner? Seems like the comp is generally lower

As an associate, if you connect a partner to a contact for marketing purposes, and then that partner later gets a referral because of your connection, are you entitled to any sort of credit? Feel like as an associate I help bring in cases but I’m never actually given any credit for it. Is it wrong for me to think that way?

The recent most billable hours post, inspired me. What is your longest billable day? Mine was 56 hours straight with no break—and the partner was more than a jerk when I was saying no more at the 30 hour point. That was two 24 hour billable days back to back on my time sheet and on the bill, a 360 hour month, and 650 aggregated for two months. And it is one reason (of so many reasons) why this job can suck so much! At least I got a good bonus...
