I ask for it in writing and then negotiate from there. Some places prefer to negotiate before the writing, but you definitely don't need to accept on the spot.
I thought about the offer and then negotiated. They didn’t go to written until we fully agreed on terms.
I verbally agreed on the amount with internal recruiter, but ended up getting more. I think the hiring managers made the call. It was a pleasant surprise. So you will never know until you get the written document.
Always say you’ll think it over before negotiating on the spot. Typically speaking there is so many factors to consider, salary vs. stock as one example, that make it pretty difficult to immediately counter. So you should run some numbers for various scenarios based on what they initially presented. First and foremost though, if you’re really interested in the opp, you definitely want to express thanks and your excitement about the offer. The hiring manager will want to know if you were excited about what was presented and gives them something to work with.
