When you have downtime at work, do you embrace it or do you try to occupy yourself? I’m kind of past the point of caring to generate work for myself. I’d rather just enjoy the slow days while they last. Fortunately my manager doesn’t expect me to stick around and look busy if I’m not. I would hate to have to sit at my desk pretending to be busy just for appearances!

If it’s not too busy I make time for self learning. Otherwise I sometimes take nice lunches with friends. I also hate looking busy for the sake of looking busy.

I haven't had a lot of downtime lately, so finding ways of using it hasn't been much of a challenge. But when it does happen to occur I usually try to use it somewhat productively. There's always something I can look into or something I can look back at and review what could have been done better. In other words, tasks that can be useful, but are low priority in terms of having current deadlines. Sort of my own equivalent of the cold case files.

I occupy myself. There’s always more I’d like to get done

I don't get a lot of downtime at work these days so I have learned to embrace when I do get a little bit of time to breathe. I used to always find work for myself to do to stay busy but honestly sometimes it is nice to just take a little breather.

Same! I feel like its better not to waste my time doing busywork and I'd rather save that energy for important tasks

Nature of work - What kind of work can I expect from these companies? 3. would I get the opp to use any authoring Tools? 4. Work life balance - which is better? 5. Increments - avg % hike? 6. I just had an employee tell me they are on the verge of quitting due to burnout- actually going to quit but was told to talk to HR for options (we don't have any in place). The manager wants to keep them as they are one of our best employees.

Any recommendations on how to help alleviate burnout when the cause is from customers rather than the company? Is it worth it to let the employee leave and spend months looking for a replacement causing more stress/burnout with others?

I have a great relationship with my partner (work with him about 70%). I’ve always felt like he had my back. I wasn’t promoted this year which prompted me to start looking outside, there are other reasons too as I thought about path to partner, WLB, hot market. I now have an offer in the industry which is 100% wfh and in cybersecurity. Need help on how to approach the conversation with him? Where do I even start? I know there will be pushback/guilt and I’m dreading the discussion.

Normally I’d just keep them on and work on it alongside other goals, but they don’t have any other goals, and with COVID, and my upcoming maternity leave in March, a more compact caseload would be advantageous.
