If you want the recruiter to negotiate salary for you and you are already confident you got the job and the company wants you, just tell the recruiter not to bother calling you until they secure whatever salary you would accept at a minimum. So long as you never let a recruiter think you are desperate or NEED a job you can make them dance like a marionette. Make those bottom feeders work for their money.
They said they would at the beginning, but when push came to shove, they wanted me to take what I was being offered to hurry up and get their commission. They will try to convince you it's a great number, but if you feel you deserve more and they don't want to help you get out, I say ditch them like I did. Know your worth!
One thing to mention- my buddies fiancé has been in recruiting for a long time and said in most cases for a serious accounting/finance/IT job they usually have a “ceiling number” from the company that they’re not willing to go over (usually 10-15% higher than their original offer). That number is also taking into consideration the commission the employer will need to pay the recruiter for bringing them a qualified applicant. At a certain point if the recruiter stops pushing for the number you want, that means you’re over the ceiling.
TLDR: if the recruiter stops pushing well before getting to the number you want, you’re probably not going to get it.
EY1 is right, don’t leave it up to the recruiter. They’re going to do what it takes to get the role filled so they can get paid
My recruiter pushed and I got a few K extra. It really depends if this is a good recruiter or not. Many recruiters make commission based on the salary you’re going to receive, so it should be in their interest to push it as much as they can manage (again, if they’re any good at this.)
