Also, when I’ve been in the position it’s just been two work weeks, so 10 days vs. 14. Not sure if that helps or not
2 weeks is a courtesy you extend. If they were to fire you, same courtesy would not be extended. Don’t stress, and just tell them whatever date that is aligned with your next step.
Thank you! I guess I’m just nervous I’ve never had to do this before!
10 business days / 14 calendar days
Give your full two weeks if you can as a general rule. It's the standard professional courtesy unless you truly have an extra special circumstance that prevents you from doing that. While you wouldn't get this courtesy back if fired for cause, almost all employers give severance pay when they lay you off which is the same as a notice and even better technically because you're getting money without having worked for it.
Neither employers are required to give severance by law nor are resigning employees required to give 2 weeks notice by law. It's the unspoken professional rule and not following it whenever possible is amateur
Make sure you give a full 10 days. Don’t pooch your exit. You never know who’ll you need to ask for a job or reference. Also, don’t slack after you give notice. Offer to help find your replacement, make sure you complete/handoff projects, offer to sit for an exit interview. This is the time you’ll be remembered for.
I wasn’t sure if it was supposed to be 10 days or if it was actually 14, which is why I wanted to ask. It ended up being too late in the day to talk to my boss today, so first thing in the morning it is!
And congratulations
Thank you, it’s exciting, but also kinda scary! It’s a big change
So giving notice in the a.m. tomorrow, would that make the 18th the 2 weeks? Just trying to figure it out because I have to move/book movers!
It’s 10 business days, so yes the 18th but you could get away with having the last day be the 15th if needed
I have almost always given two weeks notice. Truly, it really depends on the relationship you have with your team/company. My last role - I gave notice on a Tuesday, and my final day was that Thursday, but I was not happy there.
