At what point (if at all) do prospective partners become aware of these kinds of things? Or do they all just rely on the legal and practical advice they receive from inside the firm to make these decisions?
For us we get back the latest book value of the shares we own. The shares don’t appreciate a whole lot - but we get the latest value. The profit sharing every year increases overtime as you buy more shares of course.
I am not at Big4. Non public. As context since it varies.
You get the value of your equity at the time of departure. The estimate is 2-3m in appreciation after 10 years, and if you make it to 20 years more like 10-15m on the low end. Assumes we grow over time of course - could change if we stop growing double digits every year.

Details vary across firms but you get back whatever you put in plus whatever the appreciation was. How else could it work?
Need to account for deferred earnings and taxes over the years which takes a chunk out.
Anyone know how it works for Bain? Typical CDC earned per year?
Similar to the numbers BCG quoted above. People don’t quote it in their comp figures though, so when you hear people talk about Bain P comp that is all cash
