Why did the consultant have access to this sensitive document?

CSA1 — When I am developing sales material, I usually store the pricing file in a common (internal) sub folder. Everyone on the sales team has access to that folder. And that is how it should be as everyone on the team should read and understand the proposal. Managers at Accenture need to know and understand the sales process (ex-ACN here). And to be promoted, Consultants need to be performing at a Manager level.

OP, I am sure your report is having a major panic attack. The very first time that I led a proposal as a senior manager, I replied to an email talking about our pricing (fortunately not margins or cost) that had the client CCd by mistake. As soon as I hit send at 1:00am I noticed what I did. 3 years later, I still get chills when I remember it, because I actually had to explain the margin and resource cost on the email and totally forgot!!!! The partner looked me in the eye, asked if he can trust me moving forward and that was it! He didn't share that with anyone, didn't write about it on my feedback and never mentioned it again. I am beyond grateful and every time he asks me for help, I just ask "how high?" Forgiving him/her might be the biggest lesson. Pay it forward 🙂

Oh, wow, I can imagine! And, let's be honest: we've all had that ONE MAJOR FUCKUP(TM) at some point during our careers. I have most certainly had one - and back in my analyst days when I hadn't quite figured out that a single one of these doesn't get you insta-fired, too. I was terrified of having to call my manager to confess! So, no, I'm obviously not about to decapitate the poor guy. As a matter of fact, from a career development perspective, I happen to think it probably did him good. Smart kid, good motivation, too, but he is pretty cocky not only towards me (SM he hasn't worked with before, 30s, female) but also towards our MD (50s, male, "authority figure" type) and everyone else. I hope he learns out of this that, no, he doesn't quite know it all yet and to apply a bit more caution to how he goes about stuff. Fingers crossed!

OP — sorry to hear that. I feel bad for you, as your day is now filled with emergency internal conference calls. I feel bad for your report, they probably are just beginning to realize the scope of this mess. I will raise a glass to both of you tonight.

I actually feel bad for my report, too (less so for myself, I'm okay with a bit of a crisis). Still going to have to tear the poor kid a new one, though, for very obvious reasons!

Pw protect these files

Or at least turn on DRM so the client can't open.

Note for the crowd: Consultant is the 3rd step in ACN's hierarchy and is approximately equivalent to B4 Senior (and MBA hire rank).

likehelpful

Not necessarily. There’s a wide gap between lower and higher level Consultant. And MBA hires are actually called Senior Consultants.

Here’s a solution... update the spreadsheet with bogus numbers... and resend to the client saying “Apologies, wrong version. Here’s the latest.” Problem solved.

MD is fine - in the sense of "not quite sure what to say to me", seeing as he asked for consultant to be on my bid team "for experience building". Client ... we're sort of trying to figure this one out beyond "immediate apology & damage control".

Yeah I feel your pain but sounds like this file was laying around for the kid to find and do something stupid with

That's a very fair point, EY1. I don't think we're particularly good at BD onboarding around here either. Pretty sure my own first "you're on a sales team now" briefing pretty much consisted of "here's the RfP, figure out what the deliverables are and draw up a plan for who does them by when".

like

Yikes. We generally never give out pricing Information to anyone below manager.

What was your reaction?

😳😱

Well, IMHO, they shouldn’t be up for promo to M if they can’t review a deliverable before sending it to the client.

Pro se plaintiff, an attorney, filed a complaint alleging mold defects after closing on a property. Client, layperson, may have agreed orally to a settlement amount without proof of damages prior to filing appearance and obtaining an attorney. Client filed appearance pro se, then plaintiff sent over a draft settlement agreement few weeks later which client didn’t sign. Client then got an attorney, filed answer, etc. Can this oral agreement be voided for coercion, indefinite mat’l term, etc?

While everyone’s situation is unique, it appears to me that there is a general (and substantive) difference between the mindset of senior execs/partners (Gen Xers) and the Gen Z/Millennial troops as to the need to head back to the office. There is a world of difference between “the office” as code for “client lunches, rounds of golf” vs “needless commuting time that will eat into a working day that is already unsustainable”. Do you feel your organization is in touch with where you are?

I don’t admire my project leadership and sometimes loose my motivation to work on the project. How do guys deal with this scenario? I don’t want to come across as I want to leave the project but at the same time, I am finding it difficult to hang on to it. Why I don’t admire project leadership? I am not learning anything new from them (I don’t know everything but I feel I am solving small problems and don’t really getting anything new from the project)

Currently in a rotational program at EY (first year out of undergrad). Got placed on a long term risk project and wondering if it’s worth it staying long term. Currently interviewing for the strategy team at a legacy payments company (think visa or Mastercard) and wondering if it’ll stifle growth doing internal consulting. Would definitely appreciate any insights on this as I’m not too sure who who talk to and ask. Thanks!

If all the top consulting firms made anonymous decks or gave anonymous pitches to a client, eg no branding and the client did not know which firm made which deck, do you actually think that the client would prefer MBB? Is MBB actually coming up with better/more innovative solutions? I feel like I see many repeat or slightly altered solutions on almost all of my cases, are these really things that people at Deloitte/Accenture etc aren’t coming up with?

I’m starting to feel very flat about my job. Part of its burnout, but I’m realizing the other part is that I’m just not fulfilled by what I do. I just switched teams and have a great and supportive career manager, but my day-to-day client work is soul sucking. I’ve found myself feeling cynical about things. Not sure where to go or how to look. I’m 26, have advanced relatively quickly, but don’t want to start at the bottom again. Any tips on getting started?
