When your firm requires billable hours, how are they calculated? Actual vs realized (I.e. what you put on your billing sheet vs what is billed to the client). Does your firm differentiate? Which number do they go by? My mind is somehow not comprehending how some big law hours are under my small firm requirement?

I’m in biglaw. They track by the hours I enter. Realization rate is tracked for partners responsible for matters, though I’m sure if everyone consistently writes off a particular associate’s time it’ll get noticed.

Counting by realized hours is totally screwing over associates because they have no control over that.

Thanks for this, definitely the boat I am in now and never know what is billed to the client!

Biglaw here. My firm calculates hours worked for purposes of the billable requirement based on actual hours entered.

like

My firm only counts hours actually billed the clients. When partners give discounts to clients I get screwed. I just assumed everywhere was that way.

like

When I had a billables requirement, it was based upon my time entries, not what the client was billed.

I have a partner consistently write off my hours.
Then what can I do?
I am merely a very new staff attorney

I have also spent 4 months on parental leave, so I have only spent 16 months in the team. I am paid the same as an NQ. This all feels very unfair. Please share any advice you may have.

First year in a v10 corporate group. Wondering if billable hour “hoarding” is a thing? As in, my group is busy, there’s seemingly lots of work to go around, and I’ve only gotten positive feedback so far, but this month I’ve gotten relatively few assignments. Wondering if that could be related to seniors/mids wanting to hit billable targets for themselves?
