COVID may never fully disappear, even with a vaccine... so, life must go on.

It disappeared enough for everyone to nearly act as though we're back to normal.

I live in a low density rural area. We've had 13 total deaths from COVID in my county. I WFH and I spend my summer weekends off the grid in the wilderness camping, kayaking, and fishing. My lifestyle was made for this pandemic.

What do u do for a living?? I’m curious about living a lifestyle like that once I have an opportunity to change after the pandemic

We just didn’t social distance enough. Also it is on a down swing in many parts of the world. The crazy assumption was that somehow we’d have somewhat competent leadership. In many areas we haven’t had more cases than capacity. Granted there are areas that are close to collapse.

I didn’t see a lot of people taking that extreme position. Most of what I saw was people advocating for (eventually) allowing folks who were not elderly or high risk to do their own risk-tolerance analysis and live life and operate the economy (with precautions) because the virus was not as lethal as originally predicted and because the virus simply isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. I tend to agree that we just have to figure out a way to live with it. We were supposed to flatten the curve, and I think for awhile in certain areas of this vast and diverse country, we certainly tried/did. Who knows what would have happened if we didn’t shut it down for awhile but I think most people agreed with that. It’s also okay to be worried about the economy, since the negative public health consequences of a major collapse could outweigh the effects of the virus 100 fold.

I was due for a promotion but then covid hit, and during the peak of layoffs/furloughs, I was given the run-around that we have agency wide promotion freezes, etc. Over the past month, a handful of people have been promoted. I know everyone's situation is different but I can't help feeling snubbed. How do I know whether they are genuinely trying to promote me and can't, versus them stringing me along for as long as possible? I dont want it to come to having to bring another offer to the table..

Quick update for those who might be curious about the situation in my school and our lack of COVID precautions. I often comment on here about how my school stayed in person all year last year with almost no difference from a normal year. No mask mandate, no teachers or staff masking. 10% or less of students masking. Very few vaccinated here. Results: we have no students, staff, or family members in the hospital. Very few cases either. Two months of this now.

I am so grateful to have a job right now but I am really struggling. I’ve been at D for a little under a year and have been really unhappy with my experience. In particular, my current project and my direct supervisor make me feel unbelievably incompetent and under appreciated. Given COVID, there is little flexibility to roll off. I’ve tried to stick it through but I’m at a breaking point. Any suggestions on how to make the best of it? Or next steps?
