So I adopted a cat during quarantine. Although I love him, having him seems to have worsened my anxiety. I would never give him away but the responsibility has been giving me severe anxiety. Even though I had thought long and hard about getting him. I think coupled with the fact I started a new job a month ago, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed. I’m an IP associate (focused mainly on trademarks) in an AMLaw 200 firm (slightly below NY market pay) and I’m curious to know what IP groups (mainly trademark related practices) at V50 firms are like. My practice is relatively chill. No major fires to put out - steady and predictable 8-9 billable hours a day. I can generally not work on weekends. Am I at a unicorn shop or is this normal for Trademark practices?

Has anyone been pushed into a practice group that they weren’t interested in? How did it pan out?

I started at a v100 firm in NY 6 months ago from a regional firm in the transactions group. Since work has been slow I haven’t had too many opportunities to do good work for partners but I feel I have when given the chance.

However, one partner who is notoriously difficult has given me a number of assignments and is an extreme micromanager and know it all. Now when I get an email from him my stomach drops as nothing positive ever comes out of it. Does anyone have advice on coping with this?

Those of you with billable years starting Jan 1… how many hours are you at for the year (and year/group)

PSA: Two years ago I had a nervous break down on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. An intense deal I was leading closed and I felt relief but I couldn't stop crying. I went under my desk and cried for 4 hours until I passed out. Partner called me on Thanksgiving about post-closing matters and I just answered and then hung up. That was when I sought professional help and started to make real boundaries. That break has made all of the difference.

Are there any books/guides on being a good junior associate? For example, something that would lay out things like being responsive, tips for having better attention to detail, thinking of your senior associate as your client, how to file emails, etc.

Any firms have their October back to office dates pushed yet?

Having one of those days where little errors are creeping into things. E.g. addressed comments from a client and when sending to the partner for review later, forgot to flag that I didn’t address one of the comments because it was directed to him. He wasn’t happy I didn’t mention the comment in my email with the draft which, also mad at myself for not doing, although I expected him to read the draft and he did. Any tips for slowing down when you’re jumping between 10 matters in a day?

What would you include about you on your bio as a late junior associate/early mid level? I feel like it’s important to flag what you work on, but also not like you have much control over that at this stage. Anything that’s a huge accomplishment to have done as a junior just feels braggy.
