My mentor was my former boss very early on in my career. He made a difference in my career by modeling what it’s like to work at Google. He taught me to how to do basic coding (HTML, CSS), he offloaded much of his old responsibilities, he gave me tutoring sessions of my job and monitored my work before letting me fly solo, he implemented Google’s “20% creativity time” by encouraging me to not do any work and instead innovate and be creative in my job. Our weekly 1/1s were more than just status updates, but round table conversations on innovating and improving. He also shared funny jokes and nuggets of wisdom every day, was laidback, but very sharp and focused. He empowered me in so many ways. I am forever changed by him.

My former boss and good friend (she just doesn’t know it). She taught me something I could never pay back or learn from a school or workshop: confidence.
She was brilliant, honest, and fearless. She taught me how to be my best self and gave me the space to learn gaps in my skill set to get me to the next level.
