Where do more boutique firms (like Oliver Wyman, Roland Berger, Huron, zs, slalom) rank in comparison to big 4 or Accenture or ibm? I know mbb is top tier but I feel like everyone else is debatable

The whole rankings thing is growing tiresome. None of those firms are boutiques; they are global players. From a client perspective, all of them are better than others, including MBB, in certain fields. From an employee perspective, OW and RB offer better pay and faster promotion timelines than all Big 4. Probably ZS too.

Would argue that ZS is top tier for pharma & med device sales, marketing, ops, and strategy. In these areas, we often compete with (and often outperform) MBB and sometimes Deloitte Monitor for the most strategic work.

Yeah wouldn’t think of any of these firms as boutiques. One of the things in common (and I could be wrong) is that all of these firms tend to be more specialized, or at least have a significant portion of revenue stream coming from a specific industries/service line. ZS in Pharma, Huron in healthcare (provider), OW (healthcare & fin services), etc. I think all of these firms are very competitive with B4/ACN/IBM in their main focus areas. There is some overlap with MBB, primarily OW and RB (in Europe). ZS to some extent, and mostly in S&M cases for pharma. Huron has Innosight & Life Sciences strategy groups, but they are a small groups. Idk about Slalom. To ATK’s point about comp, I think OW is ahead of the pack in terms of comp. the rest are competitive with B4, ACN, and IBM. I’m ex D and got a big jump when I switched and had a hard time getting comparable offer from other B4, so happy with comp so far. Based on personal experience, I feel like these companies compensate for lesser known brand with better comp packages, culture, etc.

D1 - yes they're involved in true strategy work though I can't speak to the details (I'm on the West Coast - can speak to it for our offices here). Also agree with H1, especially regarding culture! I don't mind ZS's lack of brand power because 1) it doesn't matter, our clients come back over & over again because they know us for quality and 2) internally there is a distinct humbleness that I have not seen at other firms, which ensures we never take our work for granted + learn to innovate and tailor solutions to our clients needs.

ZS1, how’s the Pharma practice in ZS’s NY/NJ offices? Do they do true strategy work?

Hi Tax Bowlers, I'm an experienced associate (2yrs) in a Big 4 Transfer Pricing division. I have reached a point in my career where I am considering taking up a professional certification. Several colleagues recommended taking up either ACCA or CFA, however, I see little connection between these certifications and the work that I am currently doing, and what I plan to do in the future. What would you guys suggest? Would it be detrimental to my career if I did not take up any certifications?

2 years at MBB + M7 MBA, currently in Chicago. Looking to move to a lower cost of living geography. Heavily considering exiting into Tech in the Research Triangle Park Area (think Raleigh, Cary, Durham, Morrisville) . Targeting these firms for BizOps/ Sales Strategy roles: Cisco, Lenovo, IBM, Salesforce, Amazon, Microsoft. Non-negotiable is a focus on cloud technologies - either as a provider or an adopter. Any heavyweights I am missing? (Purposely left GCP out). Appreciate the stress test!

My Creative Director left for paternity leave, and left me with all the work, facing the client, going to shootings, editing. I've been working 15 days straight, no weekends. The agency hasn't given me any back up/someone I can team up with to do the job. Is this normal? I'm used to have a partner, a copywriter or another creative working alongside. Keep in mind that I'm mid-level.
