Who pays less than $2k? Based on my experience people like to downplay the rent they pay. Maybe they signed a 2 yr during pandemic and when that expires they are about to get their rears handed to them in terms of prices

Astoria is below $2K for walk-up pre-war buildings for a 1 BR. Luxury buildings are $2.5K & up for a 1 BR. Door to Door in Columbus Circle in 15 minutes
You find sub -2k apartments outside of Manhattan. You can have a spacious, safe, convenient place to live that’s marginally less convenient than manhattan if you’re willing to check out places like Astoria, prospect heights, Carrol gardens, etc.
Everything is super expensive right now :(
South Brooklyn is a really great place to live though if you’re priced out of manhattan.
Check equity residential buildings as some of them offer to match people to be roommates
