Next step is retirement / philanthropy
What do you have in mind for philanthropy?
Buy side consultants? Bankers? PE?
Doesn’t narrow down much, but generally interested in those within VC, PE, HFs as those seem to be the most popular buy side roles
If you find yourself mid-career in PE could you perhaps transition to ops or asset mgmt with the eventual goal of running one of the portfolio companies or another company?
Maybe cut the transition and go straight from VP at PE to M&A at a portfolio or standalone company?
Asking here as I’m not in PE but interested to hear what ppl say.
There’s a lot of churn below the VP level, people move from large funds to smaller for lifestyle, exit to corporate / tech / startups, etc. Once you’re VP onwards usually you’re on more of a career track with the firm and the golden handcuffs (i.e., carry) make it difficult to leave
My medium term goal is just to milk it & allocate as much as possible in the no-fee co-invest funds.
I think those around me are in the same boat.
Longer term, leaving to start my own shop is the goal.
B1, what steps are you taking now to set yourself up to have your own shop? Or does that happen naturally given the firm you’re at now
Trying to figure that out. It’s a pretty good lifestyle, but not sure where to go after.
At PEA1, why don’t you think it’s reasonable? Don’t most PE folks go on to manage/lead PortCos at the very least?
Honestly, I don’t plan on going anywhere. If my fund continues to offer the challenges and growth that it has in the past, I’ll be sticking around for my entire career.
