@razorfish it’s indecipherable comments like this that often makes strategy feel like some super secret network. what it boils down to, for me, is privilege. the job hunt doesn’t have to (and shouldn’t) be that way.
How dare you speak that way about WK. PRIVILEGE? Gasp...
You need a strategy.
I create a list of places I would like to work at the beginning of every year.
I have a monthly email reminder to check their career postings.
I also build my network based on that list. I start with who I know, ask for introductions and start the slow relationship build.
(This part helps with the super secret strategy job thing.)
I also have another list, of really great recruiters. I make sure I am connected to them on LinkedIn. I reshare a few posts every once in a whole.
When my job search kicks off, I start with that list.
While working through both lists, naturally you come across "interesting companies, " add them to later list.
When the first two lists are complete- start working through the interesting company lists.
When I'm actively looking, I am on every job board known to man (indeed, monster, CV land, Reed, whatever weird "built in this city" job board) BUT I only go there once I have contacted my lists and reviewed my next job goals.
Job hunting is NOT EASY but if you take a research approach based on your own goals (not just make money), you feel more motivated, you'll naturally grow your network (its based on interest not just a job) and you won't feel like a CV firing machine. This project doesn't have to be a stress based response. :) Good Luck!
Strategy Twitter peeps
Build your network. Hit up recruiters that have reached out previously. Bug ur friends.
I use LinkedIn and Glassdoor and sign up for alerts. Had a few interviews this way actually, too bad I’m an unlikeable cretin.

for you the first test is before there is any job

Sorry, my reply was intended to be light hearted. No disrespect intended.
Find 100 strategists on LinkedIn. Yes, 100. Ask them for advice. Instill guilt by telling them your plight. Once they reply, ask them questions on how they got their job.
Divide the results into buckets. Use this info to formulate a plan.
