Where is the future home for principled, democratic conservatives? Do we think a new conservative party can build around the likes of Cheney, Romney and Kinzinger? How can they gain critical mass? In a world where Trump is the head of the Republican Party? No. There is no future for these people in that party. They’d need to become independents. If they did, they’d maybe be able to split the vote locally to keep the rabid Trumpers (think Boebert, MTG, Jim Jordan) out of seats but that would basically give those seats to Democrats. Over time, when Trump does eventually go away, this may help the small number of principled Republicans reclaim their party’s soul, or it could actually push the Republicans even further into conspiracy theory insanity. I worry about people like Hawley taking on the MAGA mantle to try to promote themselves, but I don’t know if they’d have the bombast and stage presence to become the next Trump. Trump is an incompetent moron, but imagine the damage someone with Hawley’s intellect and total lack of moral character could have done.

I don’t think they’ll go to war, that would be mutually assured destruction and they all know it. That said, I think MTG, Boebert and Jordan would be better at replicating Trump’s rants to crowds, while Hawley, Cotton etc. are smarter and wouldn’t encourage as many Democrats to get out and vote against them. I almost see it becoming a coalition of smart but despicable and crazy but stupid driving any Republican ticket that doesn’t have a Trump on it. The question is, does smart but despicable play Trump or Pence?

Adding more diverse representation to your suggestions would greatly help.

Sure. Folks like Steele, Condoleeza Rice and Will Hurd I can totally get on board with. Would have hoped that old Marco Rubio would have found a home there, but he too has been radicalized recently. Basically what I think is missing is a center-right economic and social policy platform that wants to work within the democratic framework. Something that my dad - as an aspirational immigrant from a somewhat socially and fiscally conservative background - could have voted for (and indeed did, for previous center-right candidates). I’m quite liberal so I would likely not be the target market, but I could turn if the conditions were right.

Uphill battle for a Cheney-Romney-Kinzinger party. They will get crushed in primaries. All this Trump psychophancy is to win primaries. Crazies dictate outcomes in primaries.

That could only happen if there were anti gerrymandering laws.

The GOP outliers who don't support Trump can make a stance for themselves and elevate their position, but once the party pressures them to vote one way or another they will always fold. The strength of the GOP lies in how spineless its individual members are.

like

Isn't this the strength of any party really?

Until modern conservatism is eradicated like the cancer it is, these folks have no home

More diverse representation and a more nuanced stance on immigration, as well as dropping the racist undertones, would do the party well. There are a ton of more conservative leaning black and Latino voters who vote Democrat just because Republicans come across so racist right now. A little bit of effort could go a long way.

That’s certainly part of it. But also seeing a right wing party stand up for democracy and democratic institutions. Many recent immigrants, at least, have fled either failed states, broken democracies or places with otherwise weak governance. Seeing the GOP start to take the country down the same track is an affront to people who left exactly that kind of circumstance to come to the US in the hope of it being better.

Just need to vent: my friend refuses to bring up the topic of covid and how it will likely effect her wedding. She’s just moving forward like we aren’t in a pandemic and it’s becoming exhausting trying to be supportive and excited for her when it feels like she’s living in a fantasy world. She just had us purchase bridesmaids dresses and I can’t help but feel like it was a complete waste of a few hundred dollars. I feel bad for having these thoughts but I’m over it.
