Use an ATM period. There are cash machines but they wont give as good of a rate as ATM. Also unlike most countries, Japan doesnt try to rip you off in hotels or airports. Do a quick check but generally fees are consistant. Mini bar beer is only about 360
Do you actually need cash? Depending on what you’re doing you may just be able to pay by credit card Otherwise, use a debit card issued by a bank that doesn’t charge ATM or exchange fees (Fidelity, Schwab etc) when you get there.
Make sure you give the issuers of any cards you take a heads up that you’ll be there so they don’t decline the charges because they’re not used to seeing them used there. Most allow these “travel watches” to be done online, otherwise call in before you leave.
Of the last 20 or so countries I went to, I just used local ATMs if I needed cash at all, which I usually didn’t.
Always local ATM, best exchange rate you’ll get. Try to avoid the ATM at the airport
Easiest way in Japan is 7/11
Japan is a super heavy cash country
Yea they use cash in Japan often. Post offices have ATM’s too there
Always, everywhere: ATM
Thank you for the heads up! Consensus: ATM in Japan!
