@VP2 you and your company sound like a real hoot. Attitudes like that are what cause such a high incidence of mental illness in this industry. I urge you to remove that stick and live a little.
Break? This isn’t college.
Holy shit VP please tell us where you work so we know to avoid it. Just having fun with a little post about the holiday. And I actually do think it’s pretty effed up if a client or an internal deadline is set that requires cutting the holiday short.
VP1, many agencies give the week between Christmas and NYE off, aka break. We do it as guaranteed time to recharge, spend family time, or go on vacation. Also helps parents who have kids on school break to not have to worry about babysitters, etc.
The USA has a horrible culture of less PTO days and less federal days off than other countries, and even on those days, continuing to work, leading to higher burnout. I think it’s fantastic when we get those few days off. I genuinely believe it has led to higher retention at my company to have things like summer Fridays and Holiday break.
All
None
What? I mean I’m pretty sure I get a calendar at the beginning of the year saying which days we have off. Sounds like a designated break to me. Just like high college!!
VP2, you've got it all wrong. We don't owe you anything. We aren't serfs. If people don't like what you offer they can and will leave.
☝️I know, my company often (but not always) closes then, but it’s not “break” - it’s discretionary and you are expected to check in if your clients are working. the phrasing of “being made to work over break” is childish. as is “putting your foot down over it.” You are not owed this. “Break” is not in the calendar like when you were in college. Better phrasing would be, “what companies offer the benefit of being closed over the Christian holidays? If yours is. It have you complained?"
VEEP WHERE DO YOU WORK? Also have you seen Scrooged?
People will do their best for you, if you do your best for them. That means it’s incumbent upon me to put my foot down with the other senior management when it comes to taking the holiday time to which we are all entitled.
Funny how the whole agency suddenly gets the time off, once they realize creative won’t be around or available.
I get a ton of shit for it, but that’s part of the job.
I work a little every day of vacation. But I limit it to an block so I am not always on. If I see an email I won't respond to it until night or even the next morning. If it is not urgent I will draft a response and not send it. It is my way of not being 100 percent available. People know if it is urgent they have to call or text me. And sometimes it is urgent and you have to work. End of year is really tricky as real things do have to be finalized and reported by 12/31.
Working. “Put foot down” for team but got denied. At least this year it is only 3 days. We will have mimosas and keep the seats warm because we have to. (Even though clients are off). At least it’ll be quiet. Sliver lining: May be able to get some work done without meetings about meetings. ☃️🎄
VP2 is literally everything I hate about this industry
Expectations are set by me and by the agency, with the understanding that something may fall through the cracks. I’m not anticipating working t-giving or the day after
☝️never said you owed anything, but neither do they owe you. It’s the very definition of a business relationship. They pay you to be there and you work the days they require. You seem to think I’m “the man” requiring you to work on non- holidays. I’m just one of many who like having extra days off but don’t expect it and don’t claim someone is causing me mental anguish-into-illness when they don’t give me a treat.
Agencies suck, especially the big ones, but not because they make you work on non holidays.
