If you’re trying to get away from working long hours, this is the wrong question to be asking lol (if the answers above haven’t already made that clear)

Eh. I'm at one of the firms mentioned in here and I've been very successful at slipping under the radar for the most part. I'm in M&A and will likely not hit 2000 this year. Would have been bonus ineligible anywhere else in previous years. Reviews have been mostly very good with some very minor critiques. Others at my firm who catch more attention from partners are far less fortunate. It's all a gamble.

There’s ALWAYS an hours requirement, just some firms decide to write it down.

Cravath has no billable hour requirement, and it’s also not uncommon to bill over 3000 hours. The average is roughly 2400-2500. No stated requirement doesn’t mean an hours expectation won’t be there. I’ve heard of associates being reprimanded for being under 2400 in reviews.

It’s like “unlimited vacation”. Sometimes stated minimums/maximums paradoxically make things better because they establish a concrete reference point.

No billable requirement means “our poor dumb associates will just keep billing to keep up with the Joneses and are way over any standard requirement. Let’s not discourage them.”

like

I always assumed high salary + no minimum billable requirement = we don’t need to say what the minimum is because you’ll all be billing 2500 anyway.

Forget what everyone else is saying. I lateraled from a firm with a requirement to one without and love that I don’t have to constantly be asking for work when I’m slow bc I’m stressed I won’t get a bonus. We work a bit more but it definitely takes away the anxiety of not meeting bonus hours.

Small firm owners need pov! Some good news after almost 11 months of applying and interviews and lots of rejections finally got an offer! In NYC small firm, ex big law folks, no billable hours, niche practice area, appearance of forwarded thinking firm, remote till who knows when, emphasis on pro bono initiatives and building book of business. The catch salary. Was making around 140k at last firm with 1800 billable. Offer is 85k and revist to bump to around 100k in several months after review

I am a 10 yr lawyer. 7 yrs in my practice area. Little over a year at current firm. Still an associate. Im at large plaintiff firm w/ billable requirements. I do mass/class cases and hold a couple leadership positions (these were competitive to get). What should salary be and when should I make partner. I’ll add I work remote and pretty autonomously. Little contact with partners or anyone at my firm.

Have seen comp for NACR (restructuring) listed at around 150-200 for analysts, 200-275 for associates, and one mention of senior associates at 375k. Supposedly NACR gets crushed in terms of hours. But i've also read that targets are around 2000 hours per year? Something doesn't add up.....e.g. Associate $550/hr * 25% cap rate * 2000 billable hrs = $275k.......but 2000 hours is slightly over 40 hours a week (including 4 weeks vacay), not the 80 hr/week. So is there a ton of time on vacation?

My firm’s IT (especially system saving and file locating function) is so bad 😐😞 and they keep doing updates no one asked them for just to mess with the stuff we already got a hang of without doing anything about the issues we actually need fixed. Anyone else in a similar boat? Do you bill the client for the time it takes to fix the IT issue (or IT inefficiency generally, like time taken to find a file in a convoluted system)? Or is that supposed to be our non-billable time?

Any litigators here (ethically and legally) invest in publicly traded companies that they actively represent?
