The good part is if you get a card for that airline and bought the ticket with that card, you’d probably get double or triple points for it during the initial period and that fee would count towards the amount necessary to get the bonus points for spending x amount in the first three months
AmEx gold referral offer right now would land you 90K points after spending $4K. That's enough to cover both flights, but depends on how quickly you can hit your spend requirement.
Thanks - I should have enough time to hit the spend requirement, the wedding is next summer so not critical to book now. Based on that, is Amex gold the best option?
Another idea is to get the card of the airline and buy the flight with miles.
Set up a flight price alert too, as there is a good chance the flight price goes up. It would suck to wind up paying 750 because you waited too long.
Another timing idea is to get a card that let's you pay off the card with its own points, like chase sapphire reserve. Get the card, buy the flight, work toward the minimum spend, then pay yourself back retroactively.
you won’t get the sign up bonus until you hit a spend requirement, so if you need to buy the flight now it won’t post in time

It doesn't work like that. Highly suggest you do some leg work and research. It will be worth your time.

Start with Chase cards to avoid locking yourself out from them.
