Banker married to banker here. Works fine for us. Majority of our coworkers are men with stay at home wives. That said, it should be individual based on the wife’s personality and interests and the couple dynamic. There’s no blanket right answer here.

The best career path for a wife is to find a husband who supports her career goals no matter what those goals are and to divorce a husband who doesn't build her up personally and professionally so she can find a new one who does. Hope this helps! (Source: am a wife)

As a man I cannot answer this question but as a husband, screw those people whose egos can’t put up with career-oriented partners. Choose a career path that makes you happy and fulfilled and find a significant other who supports you

Are you a time traveler from the 1950s or something? What kind of question is this in 2021?? Divorce rates are higher for men with egos small enough not to accept an equally career-oriented partner.

likefunnysmart

Good points but I noticed there is less patience and reconciliation efforts than our previous generation. We are so quick to leave or throw in the towel. This in turn can have an impact on both parties and severe impact on the children.

like

Divorce rates are higher because those career oriented women don’t depend on their spouse for financial support and aren’t as incentivized to stay in an unhappy marriage.

I’ve worked with a lot of bankers who have stay at home partners and a lot of bankers who have banking spouses. Notwithstanding the woman’s opinion on the situation (which is important!!), I’d argue that stay at home is a worse arrangement as when you’re making banking income you typically have a nanny anyway and a lot of men get very resentful very quickly that their wives are spending so much money. Though as a woman in banking I think this is a pretty weird line of questioning and your risk of divorce is determined by how you and your future partner interact with eachother as individuals and you shouldn’t really generalize

like

Be respectful of women and their choices. A happily married couple makes the best role models for their children. The thought that someone else should sacrifice their career for you is simply backwards and disrespectful.

like

It's about what YOU want. If you let your banking job define YOUR personality...then there's a good chance that no matter what career your spouse has, you will soon want bigger better younger etc etc. The job eats empty souls.

Well whether OP is a sexist man seeking wife or a sexist marriage counselor I hope this thread made them realize women are people and not accessories to a man’s life

From reading comments, and then the original question again, OP seems to be trying to find a way to save their marriage and concede to let wife find a job. I could be wrong but the comments are telling

I don't think it changes my answer, at least. The best career for a wife is whatever she wants and the question is a huge red flag about the health of the marriage.

OP, after reading our comments are you going to share your current situation and takeaways?

I feel like my kids 1st grade teacher is being too strict, but I'm not sure if this is normal or I'm being sensitive because it's my child. E.g. she gave him 2/10 for his math homework because he doodled on the page, colored in the circle that has the page number, didn't draw the word problem neatly, wrote his last name under the name line, and says some of his numbers aren't legible. All his answers were correct, except one where he forgot to fill in the blank. Is this normal? X-posting

Does anyone have any tips for how to get an exclusively breastfed baby to take a bottle. My son is 5 months old and since he was 1 month old, I pumped maybe twice a week and gave him the bottle. From around 2 weeks ago, he refuses to drink the bottle, even when he is very hungry. I have tried different bottles and ensure the temperature is warm. The milk tastes normal (I tried a bit!). :/

I am 9 months pregnant and my firm offers 16 weeks maternity leave. Well, it just so happens that I was offered a job at a new firm, and they are flexible with start date but do not provide maternity leave (understandable since I don't even work there yet). Is it possible to accept the new job with a January start date, but not tell my current firm until a normal notice period ends, so I can keep mat leave? No payback requirements or anything. Would they know somehow?

Feeling like my firm has a very outdated parental leave policy (and none of the women partners have children)! What is the parental leave policy at your firm? Please include: (1) size of firm; (2) location of firm (city, state); (3) how many paid weeks off from firm (not state/fed benefits); (4) other policies such as ramp up/down time, etc.

Hi! We have a jogathon fundraising in my son’s school. Most of our families are overseas, and don’t want to ask donations to few friends during this difficult times. Our friends also have school age kids. Is it ok if we just do one donation as family? My son wanted to get the expensive prices, but dont want to spend $150 for a kid’s hot lunch. Sorry if it is a dumb question but it is our first fundraising. Thanks

How long is EY maternity leave? I was offered a position a year ago and the offer is contingent on a clearance so I have to wait. But at the same time I want to start a family. It has been a dilemma:(

Asking this question here for a reason. In our culture and set up, a majority of the time is spent in cooking. We usually don’t eat microwave meals. I want to understand how Indian families cope up with all the traveling associates with consulting. Does the mother or father usually stay at home or be in a “light” job?

For moms in California - can anyone explain to me how the FMLA/Paid Leave works in coordination with EY’s sixteen weeks? It seems that all the new moms take 6 months and I’m trying to figure out how that works if we’re only given 16 weeks. My husband and I are currently waiting for an adoption placement so I have no idea when I’ll need to use it, but I’m hoping it’s sometime soon :) Since I’m not actually pregnant, asking these questions feels weird, but I keep reminding myself it’s okay. TIA!

I am looking for some advice or opinions to apply for consulting jobs right now. I currently work at a mid-sized/regional firm, but plan move to a different city later this year. I have ~4 yr xp working on system implementations, IT policies/controls, and BPO, but my undergrad GPA wasn't the best (I did become a CPA and CISA though). Should I try to apply to big 3/big 4? (4) For leaving Google, I don’t know where people usually go… Please share your thoughts / correct me if I’m wrong. Thanks!
