Banker married to banker here. Works fine for us. Majority of our coworkers are men with stay at home wives. That said, it should be individual based on the wife’s personality and interests and the couple dynamic. There’s no blanket right answer here.

The best career path for a wife is to find a husband who supports her career goals no matter what those goals are and to divorce a husband who doesn't build her up personally and professionally so she can find a new one who does. Hope this helps! (Source: am a wife)

As a man I cannot answer this question but as a husband, screw those people whose egos can’t put up with career-oriented partners. Choose a career path that makes you happy and fulfilled and find a significant other who supports you

Are you a time traveler from the 1950s or something? What kind of question is this in 2021?? Divorce rates are higher for men with egos small enough not to accept an equally career-oriented partner.

likefunnysmart

Good points but I noticed there is less patience and reconciliation efforts than our previous generation. We are so quick to leave or throw in the towel. This in turn can have an impact on both parties and severe impact on the children.

like

Divorce rates are higher because those career oriented women don’t depend on their spouse for financial support and aren’t as incentivized to stay in an unhappy marriage.

I’ve worked with a lot of bankers who have stay at home partners and a lot of bankers who have banking spouses. Notwithstanding the woman’s opinion on the situation (which is important!!), I’d argue that stay at home is a worse arrangement as when you’re making banking income you typically have a nanny anyway and a lot of men get very resentful very quickly that their wives are spending so much money. Though as a woman in banking I think this is a pretty weird line of questioning and your risk of divorce is determined by how you and your future partner interact with eachother as individuals and you shouldn’t really generalize

like

Be respectful of women and their choices. A happily married couple makes the best role models for their children. The thought that someone else should sacrifice their career for you is simply backwards and disrespectful.

like

It's about what YOU want. If you let your banking job define YOUR personality...then there's a good chance that no matter what career your spouse has, you will soon want bigger better younger etc etc. The job eats empty souls.

Well whether OP is a sexist man seeking wife or a sexist marriage counselor I hope this thread made them realize women are people and not accessories to a man’s life

From reading comments, and then the original question again, OP seems to be trying to find a way to save their marriage and concede to let wife find a job. I could be wrong but the comments are telling

I don't think it changes my answer, at least. The best career for a wife is whatever she wants and the question is a huge red flag about the health of the marriage.

OP, after reading our comments are you going to share your current situation and takeaways?

My wife and I are due with a baby girl in few weeks. Still not aligned on the last name though. In our community it's the first name of the father which typically becomes the last name of the child. Considering she has put in most of the effort and carried the child for 9 months I strongly feel the last name of the child should be her first name though. I would like my name as the middle one. Don't see why this system continues to be patriarchal.

I’ve really been having the urge to get out of consulting lately. I’m hesitant to leave Deloitte however Bc my husband and I plan to start a family in about 2 years and I know deloitte’s 16 week parental leave policy is rare in the marketplace. Mom’s - do you feel like it’s worth sticking around another 2ish years for the parental leave benefit? (FYI i am newly promoted to SC)

Help! There is an assistant that works in my building that is downright rude and demeaning to both staff and students alike. She yells at us for bringing our kids to lunch right on time (when our 30 min lunch begins as well). She always complains about literally everything! We can make complaints for a team of staff and admin to try to correct, but cannot name specific people. I know for a fact a parent has already made 2 complaints this year, but I feel like more has to be brought up.

Hey moms, How do contractions really feel? FTM and I’m starting to feel a little pain in the lower part of my belly. Given I usually have a high tolerance for pain(after a ton of sports injuries) not sure what is true labor/contraction pain. Trying to avoid a car baby or a lobby baby😅 P.S: I don’t have a lot of pain during my period (which is what my mum keeps saying it’ll feel like). So unfortunately that reference hasn’t helped! Any advice helps!!

Would you take a job with this many red flags if you were desperate to get out of public? If so, what salary/comp would you need? 1. I’m interviewing for an Assistant Controller role at a medium-sized manufacturing company. 2. The interview process has consisted of 7 rounds (2 phone interviews and 5 separate Teams calls). 3. I’ve had to prepare multiple PowerPoint presentations. 4. The job positions of the VP of Finance and Controller (both of whom I interviewed) were just posted LinkedIn.
