Which career path for a wife is best for those working in banking or consulting? Divorce rates are higher I hear with those woman who are just as career oriented as their husbands. Thoughts?

As a man I cannot answer this question but as a husband, screw those people whose egos can’t put up with career-oriented partners. Choose a career path that makes you happy and fulfilled and find a significant other who supports you

likeuplifting

Are you a time traveler from the 1950s or something? What kind of question is this in 2021?? Divorce rates are higher for men with egos small enough not to accept an equally career-oriented partner.

likefunnysmart

Good points but I noticed there is less patience and reconciliation efforts than our previous generation. We are so quick to leave or throw in the towel. This in turn can have an impact on both parties and severe impact on the children.

Banker married to banker here. Works fine for us. Majority of our coworkers are men with stay at home wives. That said, it should be individual based on the wife’s personality and interests and the couple dynamic. There’s no blanket right answer here.

Divorce rates are higher because those career oriented women don’t depend on their spouse for financial support and aren’t as incentivized to stay in an unhappy marriage.

like

I’ve worked with a lot of bankers who have stay at home partners and a lot of bankers who have banking spouses. Notwithstanding the woman’s opinion on the situation (which is important!!), I’d argue that stay at home is a worse arrangement as when you’re making banking income you typically have a nanny anyway and a lot of men get very resentful very quickly that their wives are spending so much money. Though as a woman in banking I think this is a pretty weird line of questioning and your risk of divorce is determined by how you and your future partner interact with eachother as individuals and you shouldn’t really generalize

like

Be respectful of women and their choices. A happily married couple makes the best role models for their children. The thought that someone else should sacrifice their career for you is simply backwards and disrespectful.

like

The best career path for a wife is to find a husband who supports her career goals no matter what those goals are and to divorce a husband who doesn't build her up personally and professionally so she can find a new one who does. Hope this helps!

It's about what YOU want. If you let your banking job define YOUR personality...then there's a good chance that no matter what career your spouse has, you will soon want bigger better younger etc etc. The job eats empty souls.

From reading comments, and then the original question again, OP seems to be trying to find a way to save their marriage and concede to let wife find a job. I could be wrong but the comments are telling

I don't think it changes my answer, at least. The best career for a wife is whatever she wants and the question is a huge red flag about the health of the marriage.

OP, after reading our comments are you going to share your current situation and takeaways?

For those who already have a baby - I (36f) just had a baby 6 weeks ago, and my wife (33F) is now back at work (WFH) and I’m still on leave. Since I have the baby all day and get up with her all night, my wife basically “takes over” baby duty when she stops working. The problem is that within an HOUR she has lost all patience with the baby. She gets frustrated so quickly if the baby is crying and will say things like “I’m just going to let her cry since nothing im doing helps” (cont)

I am at a point where my teen's newfound "independence" is starting to impact my focus and time at work - his running off to hang with friends without permission, etc is becoming a distraction during the workday, and the impact has definitely been noticed by my superiors at work.

The issues with the kid are being handled appropriately - this is more about how to overcome perception at work

I’m looking for advice. I’m with a company that will be going through an exit soon-ish. It’ll be big. I have a fair amount of equity and I’m fully vested. But I’m so burned out from the pace and the stress of getting us across this finish line. Has anyone left a job before getting through the transaction? I know there could be a bonus at the time of the transaction or benefits of staying after the transaction, but I am not doing my best work and I want to be motivated and inspired again. Cont’d:

Advice needed! I started at an ID firm only a few months ago after a long stint doing in-house litigation. I was referred to the firm by a very good friend who also still works there. A management position at my old in-house firm has now been offered to me. Higher salary obviously and no billables. I am seriously dreading talking to my new boss and telling my friend that I want to go back in-house. Has anyone dealt with something similar? I just feel so bad and don’t want to burn bridges
