I’m in IL. Not sure I’ll stay, but am closely balancing the costs of home ownership, investment income taxation, and retirement income taxation.

Im in NYC now. Its pretty tough to save a high % of gross income with the high state tax and the city tax. But the career growth/opportunity is good and more diversity here, which is what I like.

In NC now. Currently plan to stay here or SC (we want a beach house). However, we'll need to see where our kids end up as we may want to move near them.

Currently job hunting. I know a few retired C-level executives who tell me that they would hire me at the director level in pretty much any role (despite currently being an individual contributor) because I'm extremely driven, a life-long learner, a natural leader, and deeply educated in diverse fields (PhD in engineering and MBA in analytics). However, I can't seem to land a senior role. How do I convince an executive to take a gamble on me based on my past success and strong future potential?

Do people tend to age out of wanting to FIRE?

In your 20s-30s, you don’t know much, you’re told what to do, you have few financial resources so you are tied to your job. Under these circumstances it makes perfect sense why you would want to FIRE asap.

But eventually you advance up the ladder, you are now the boss and your people do all the grunt work. You also have built up expertise which makes the job easier. And you are making the best money of your life. FIRE is no longer so pressing.

Last year I started funding my Roth IRA through Vanguard in a Target Retirement Funds. After reading a few post about the tax disadvantage of using a Target Retirement Funds, I am thinking I need to shake things up. Would you suggest moving the funds in Mutual Funds, such as VTSAX? Let me know your thoughts and best strategy to make the switch with minimal tax effect.

I have a lot of student debt from law school. I’ve refinanced a couple of times and received the best fixed rate available, but I’ve seen others refinance with a variable rate which of course is lower. I’ve read some other comments of people refinancing at a super low variable rate....isn’t this risky? Of course I am afraid of going variable and then the interest rates going up a lot. Am I missing something?

Any market considerations before refinancing my student loan with current rates? They’re giving me a .75-1% drop.

It’s worth it to refinance at this rate to save paying $1000 of interest albeit credit gets hurt. My only concern is missing out on inevitable lower rates forthcoming.

Serious question - is there a reverse FIRE strategy? I like the idea of saving and retiring early, but the one hiccup I see (and sorry if this is grim) is if you die earlier than expected. I’d be worried that I would minimize lifestyle and fun for retirement at 50 but I’d die at 49. How about a way to work 9 months out of the year and retire/travel/relax for 3 months? This way you guaranteed your dreams/etc. are fulfilled

Where can I start learning about retirement in America? I’m naive on the topic and originally from another country so I need reliable learning resources. I’m 31 and don’t have anything yet, except 6months in emergency fund and I started traditional 401k a few months ago, but can’t max it out currently as I make less than $70k right and single, so I’m currently putting 6% on a targeted retirement age portfolio.
