Creative > Strategy > Accounts
Creative = Strat = Account. Not one is more important than the other. If you can't learn how to work together than nothing is going to get done. We all need each other equally.
You will never make or sell great creative without being educated by the strategy and supported by the account team. End of story.
There's nothing wrong with strategy coming first.
Changes as it evolves, department specific. P&E is strategy, A&M is Creative, but the account names may get new ones to RFP without even considering who is on the team. Or you can just get to work, because constantly positioning for advancement doesn't do much if you are not ready.
An agency is selling creative. Everyone that says that creative is equal to account or strategy or shouldn't be in the business and is the reason why people are leaving the industry. Your product is the creative. Everything else just sells your product and if your product is bad, you're bad.
The account team yes of course. I've seen great creative made and sold without a strategy team though. There is a reason why when most ad agencies start, they start with a creative team and an account team. And there are agencies that do great like Ideo that have creatives be account persons too at the same time
IDEO / Adaptive Path environments. Fertile ground. Design, creative, strategy blended.
