At all of them you will equally have no life at all from Mo-Thu.
That being said, from my observation of many friends who are at MBB in the Bay Area, McKinsey travels most often and farthest (and I don’t mean NYC but rather the likes of Cedar Rapids); while Bain travels the least and mostly in CA (Bay Area, sometimes WA)
I know that if I leave for peer-to-peer consulting, I would miss the relatively decent work life balance I have in industry. Please help me get an idea of what I would be getting into?
Probably more dependent on the type of project and region of the world, I don’t know that one MBB consistently has better or worse WLB. That said lack of clear scope and variability of day to day work are absolutely things you would likely continue to experience at MBB. Are these consistent issues you are facing? Something you can talk to project leadership about? Maybe something that can be mitigated.
Got it, that is different than what I had assumed. I know 1-2 people who have worked on the strategy team in McLean which is what I was basing that on. Maybe explore an internal transfer as well? You will definitely have more varied experiences at MBB than what it sounds like you are describing but WLB will definitely be a trade off as other posts in this thread suggest.
At BCG I averaged 8:30 to 20:30-22:00
Bain is a bit worse, McK probably on par with BCG
Yeah that sounds off from my experience. Similar projects & same locations will have very comparable hours at all MBB. Bain has more VC/PE projects though and those tend to be more intense. But if you were to do these projects at the other two, you’d also have no life.
No significant difference across firms. Wide overlapping ranges
