You can get good pay and dull projects, good pay and exciting projects, or even low pay and dull projects (it is what it is, curb and gutter design cost some money but it isn't rocket science). But if you're getting low pay and exciting projects, the company either doesn't know how to negotiate a contract properly, is relying on cutting corners to make their bid, or is exploiting you to make it work.
Oooh I really like your last point, I can see how that could be a red flag. Thanks for the insight!!
Higher pay, because exciting projects will automatically follow
True
When I was younger I might've said exciting projects take priority, but now that I have a wife and kids that depend on me, I feel like it's not just about what I want. If a job allows me to give a higher quality of life for my loved ones then I'm taking it
Hi there Design Engineer. Greetings from Australia.
That's a good question, and I don't think the answer is black and white.
For me at work, I want stimulation, so I have actually taken a pay cut for a better job. But then, the other factor is good work is rewarded with more good work.
So I think it depends on where you are in life. If I was younger, I would say the higher pay. But I am now 50. So at my age, I would say the better projects.
You need to look into yourself and ask what is more important - money or satisfaction.
Good luck.
Pay Pay
I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't find it exciting, but I also wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't paying what I deserve for my expertise. You might have to make some concessions either way before you get that job that meets both of your wants but those jobs certainly exist
Both is best, I'd rather not choose one over the other but I'll take a crappy job for a little bit if it'll get me where I'd like to be eventually
When it comes to job offers, I would have to say that higher pay is more important to me. This is because I would like to be able to provide for myself and my family comfortably. While exciting projects are definitely a plus, I need to be able to cover my bills and expenses first and foremost.
While exciting projects are always a plus, I need to be able to earn a living and support myself and my family. I would be willing to forego some excitement in order to make sure that I am getting a good salary and benefits.
I find it more important to have exciting projects rather than higher pay. I would much rather have a job that is enjoyable and challenging, even if it means that I make a little less money. Money is important, of course, but I would much rather be happy with my job than worry about how much money I am making.
Most people would find excitement in their work more important than a higher salary. This is because if someone is unhappy with their job, they will not be productive and they may leave the company, costing the company money. However, if someone is paid more, they may be more likely to stay at the company.
It depends on if the job with exciting projects has a comfortable wage. If the pay is more than enough for living expenses and putting money in the bank, then a job I love is my next priority. If they pay difference is between livable and not, I'd go for the higher salary.
