Where do you want to be in five years (level, type of work, salary, work/ life balance) and how does that relate to the career path of the two options on the table?

One thing I have learnt at Deloitte is that promotion and comp are two very different things. Assuming you are targeting comp growth, just go where you will learn a lot and get paid better.

@OP - I love your questions, and your obvious analysis of many factors is impressive. So here’s my biased caveat, which comes with asking advice on a public forum. I am a 14 year consulting professional, and have my own choices that factor me Towards thinking consulting over industry always wins. But my husband doesn’t agree - so that might help you.

like

A1 that is great to hear and you should certainly be very proud and happy for what you have achieved. :)

I have a very similar story so this struck with me. When I first started working out of undergrad in India my pay was $4,000 PER YEAR! I was born and raised in a small town with less than 10k population, and went to very average school. I have come a long way, and know that none of my peers from high school, or undergrad make what I make (not to say that $$ should define who someone is).

Thanks for sharing A1.

@Accenture 1 - Like your break down of key factors and I did some homework on the differences! My only other concerns are on overall learning & the pace at which we work. Been a consultant for 4+ years now and haven’t experienced working in industry(FT). Based on what I have heard industry is more laid back and slow paced but that would mean you are not at the cutting edge of tools & technologies whereas you would get into a lot more on people & project management. In your mid 20’s what would you suggest? Tools 🛠, Tech, Travel 🧳 vs People, Project Management & Profits!!!

Hi Fishes,

i am getting promoted soon, i have heard that while promoting 20% hike is given. Does this 20% will also include my yearly appraisal salary hike? Or promotion hike and yearly appraisal hike will be separate? Actually first time in my life I'm getting promoted in same organisation.

How do promotions work?

1.5 YOE

Parents never had a true corporate job, so I don’t really get great advice in this subject with them. They just get happy that I got promotion.

My promotion is about 9% in my current salary with the same duties but more responsibilities… I feel I deserve more because my workload increasing with more technical aspects that I need to sharpen. But not sure how to express that or even if a promotion can be rescinded?

Hypothetical: you’ve done everything in your power since last review to set yourself up for a promotion/raise. You’ve killed it on projects, gotten consistent positive feedback from teammates and managers, etc. Let’s say the promotion happens, but the raise $ amount isn’t hitting your mark. How do you negotiate properly without concrete leverage (outside offer in hand). Also, let’s assume in this example that you’ve been turning down offers for months (title promo/ major raise).

I’ve been stuck in my role as solo graphic designer at a major music label for 5 years. I’ve been “art director” for several projects, one of which won a Grammy. How do I ask for a promotion/raise. I’ve never been in this position before and I feel so stuck and under appreciated.

I could use some advice on how I should handle this situation. I found out the other day another editor who started four months ago is making 8% more than I do. For context, I have been here for a little over a year. How do I approach my boss to inquire about a raise? Should I bring up that I know about my teammate's salary?

I’m currently an SAE at an agency in DC making $75k. 2.5 YOE but it’s my first agency job.

Is this a good salary for the role and my YOE? What salary should I be pushing for next year, whether it’s a raise or at a new firm? I’m new to agency life so any input is appreciated!

I recently asked my boss for a raise after discussing a yearly review with them. I was told because there was a company wide raise back in December, that would technically be my raise, which was $0.45/hr. I’ve stepped in to a number of roles here and feel I am not being paid adequately after taking on the extra work. I’m wondering how to go about asking for a raise of $2/hr after all this.

Is it true that the best way to increase your salary is to switch employers every 3 years? I have been with the same company 3 years and have seen people hired after me hired making almost as much as I do (hired to my previous position, but still in my department) even after I was promoted! I was thankful for my increase with my promotion when it happened in March, but now I’m realizing that I’m only making $1 more than two of my successors, who apparently were hired on at higher rates than me!

My story is long and convoluted, but essentially restructuring and major gaps on my team means I’ve even doing a different (higher paying) role than scoped for 9 months. 3 months ago when new SVP was brought on, planned structure was outlined, but my scope/title/comp weren’t updated. Now I’m being reviewed & not getting a significant raise or retitling/comp to match. I’ve fought to clarify this as much as possible, but I’m aware my manager just doesn’t go to bat for me whatsoever. Any suggestion

I’m starting to realize that your performance depends a lot more on leadership’s perception of what you’re doing than what you’re actually doing. You could be doing well if but if you’re not intentional about getting airtime with leadership for visibility, then it affects your promotion…am I right?

I had a offer letter from a firm which has 2.5 hours commute one side. During the interviews I bought this point and the partner agreed to let me come in the office once in 2 weeks and rest I can work remotely. Now I have received the offer letter and nothing of working remotely is mentioned in it. Is it implied by the interviews or should I email HR to confirm (just don’t want to sound demanding). Also someone in the interview mentioned working remotely won’t help in promotion. Can i ask this?

A couple of months ago I left consulting for a Director-level position with a team of five people (all new hires). About a week ago one of my employees (project lead) told me they feel overwhelmed by work and cannot deliver on the level they’ve been hired for. We’re talking about “downgrading” them one rank to allow for future growth into the role, but curious to hear if anyone had a similar situation and how you dealt with it?
