Which resume format looks better to you? Left or Right?

Or does it really matter?

I like the left. Partially because that’s how mine is formatted. 🤣

I’m a former professional recruiter for Fortune 500 - Fortune 100…the canva resume (right) is a big time no no.

Format does matter!

What you write and where you write it matter.

Recruiters aren’t experts in the job - they’re experts in finding people but not necessarily expert at your job.

Your resume is NOT a career highlight reel - it should be tailored to each job - grab those key words / phrases from the description and weave them throughout your resume - generic resumes are okay but since the recruiter isn’t an expert - you get 6 seconds to get a recruiter to see your resume reflects exactly what they’re looking for in the job description.

Few other tips: nobody cares about your GPA except for schools - professional resume it can come off. Your graduation year can also come off. Your address can come off there too. Highlights and skills also can come off.

Your resume literally should be your name, contact info, education level, any special certs, and then experience only as it pertains to the job you’re applying for.

There are likely a lot of things you’ve done in your career that won’t end up on your resume because it’s irrelevant to the job you’re applying for…it might go on one resume, but not on the other based on what’s in the job description…

If you’re not in America, the world tends to use a CV which is a career summary - then my input is null and void - but if you’re in America, my advice is solid.

Left! There’s a guy who did a whole test with different styles of resumes to see how many jobs he heard back from and the most traditional boring ass lookin resumes got the most attention. I changed my resume to look more like the one on the left and I’ve gotten more emails/calls since then

likeupliftinghelpful

Yeah, he did like 100 applications or more and the one on the right got less than 10% interview traction.

Left. If I'm looking at a resume, I don't want to have to scan for information. It should be very clear where/what everything is. I've helped a lot of friends revamp their resume around the Left example to great success.

Use the left for online submissions. If you get an interview, you could give the interviewer(s) a paper copy of the fancier version (right).

PM1, I can’t tell if this is satire and you’re trying to be funny or serious - if you’re trying to be serious, well, let’s fix that…

1) ATS = applicant tracking system - it’s just a database of every candidate and every job a company has ever posted. That’s it. Just a database. It doesn’t read resumes it doesn’t do anything - it’s just a database of info that recruiters can find their candidates, old candidates, post new jobs, review old jobs, look at other recruiters notes etc.

2) there’s no piles of printed resumes - stock paper isnt relevant and please do not use colored ink and certainly don’t use any company logos, even if you work there already.

Your résumé is not a place for your creativity. You hurt yourself when you do this. Use the standard traditional way that resumes look today. This is the way that recruiters and hiring managers are accustomed to seeing them. Do not put their brain in a knot to be unique. Be unique during the interview.

Lol don't even try to be special with your resume in this industry, great way to screw yourself over

The left one, and it matters more due to ATS’s where computers are basically running your resume through a scoring system, more than because of humans. ATS = Applicant Tracking System

The left one is easier for web scrapers and/or automated resume parsers.

The right one is easier to find key words by human eyes, but unlikely to get past the first stage.

It’s clear a lot of people think an ATS is reviewing resumes for recruiters…

As a former recruiter at Fortune 500 - Fortune 100, let’s put this to rest.

Applicant Tracking System is a database. It doesn’t do anything special that a recruiter didn’t tell it to do.

That auto reject? It isn’t from your resume, it’s from the application component - that’s where you get identified as an “ace” candidate, left as a new candidate or rejected automatically (if they have that part setup).

What is an ace candidate? That’s a Taleo term for a candidate that meets all the requirements and the preferred skills.

What can auto reject someone? It depends on what the recruiter assigned value to.

How can recruiters filter out candidates? By almost anything they want - radius of the job to the zip on your resume, your desired compensation, the years of experience you provided on your app (not your resume), education level you provided on the app, level of experience with certain tools (you provided on the app).

Let me be crystal clear - your application is what an Applicant Tracking System is reviewing for the auto reject - it isn’t scanning your resume.

Also, you can get auto rejection notices anytime a recruiter closes up a requisition and didn’t disposition you correctly - you might get the thanks but no thanks, you might get a notification the job is no longer open etc.

Something to keep in mind…if you EVER applied to a company using an ATS, that resume and application will be there until they no longer use that system - not that version, but the program as a whole.

My advice, go back to those companies, reset your password, remove an old resume and leave a new one - recruiters can and will sometimes search their ATS for candidates who applied in the past - they’ll search old reqs that are similar to the one they’re supporting now - they can have an ATS look for similar candidates in all the old postings - it is basically a big old candidate database that can be mined for candidates or email blasted with updates about jobs, etc.

Remember - a human is reading your resume, a human is using the ATS like a database because it is one, and if your application answers don’t meet or exceed the requirements or preferred, all bets are off, no matter how good your resume is.

Last piece of advice, put down $1.00 for expected salary so you can’t be ruled out based on compensation. You might be getting rejected by someone who doesn’t actually control the finances and is weeding you out…

Good luck
