White male privilege is when their only advice is a "quick conversation" with leadership-- as if I hadn't tried that-- & as if all managers listened to all subordinates' ideas equally... 😒🙄

That's for sure, at the end of the day it is about respect, which is of course a 2 way thing. Once that's gone it's hard to get back. In my opinion this sort of thing is not about companies but individuals. Each of us wherever we are need to make an assessment of does that person ' do the right thing' or 'have my best interests at heart'. If the answer to either of those is 'no' it probably means it's time to move on. Only the individual can make that assessment though so if you are in that situation I wish you the best of luck.

Had an interesting conversation with a female client about this today. When I asked: How did my predecessor (male) got things done before me, she answered that her leadership only "likes" (and promotes) males. I was upset and immediately corrected her, because I know this is not true and gave her examples of females that have made an impact in her organization, as employees and as partners. I am a minority female and don't make my ethnicity and gender an excuse for underperforming. If I'm not making an impact, if people are not listening, I'm probably not being strategic enough, and must do something to change that. If, for a second, I believed people when they told me I didn't have a chance because I wasn't a white male, I would have never achieved anything in my career. We (minorities and women) have to start taking ownership of our shortcomings, so we can improve and get ahead. No excuses.

Whatever you are privilege is blaming your lack of attention from Sr leadership on the Caucasian-phalocracy rather than Them not having time for your constant whining and shite ideas.

Also looks like that "creative director" got in his feels up there... he's definitely part of the problem... so racist he's making up words to justify his weak ass bigotry "Caucasian-phalocracy"... smh. Clown.

My advice is to:
1. Seek out someone who has experienced your situation and can provide firsthand advice and 2. Circumnavigate any manager who is preventing you from achieving your potential by partnering with folks above them. Or you could switch agencies. Digitas is populated top to bottom with talented ladies who aren't waiting around for some schmuck middle manager to pave their path for them.

Digitas 1, the whole point is when I DO reach out and have said conversations with managers or directors I'm looked at suspiciously or completed ignored. As opposed to some of my fellow coworkers who performance no worse or better than me, and their input is immediately acted on. Why do you think that is? 🤔

Everyone in this thread that wants to complain about privilege or white privilege, whether you're white, black, a woman or a man, please get off your high horse and go see I Am Not Your Negro to understand that America and the world are not the same, and America does owe non-white men and women A LOT. It is your ignorance to this fact that defines white privilege, and your resistance to accept the harsh reality in this country for people that are not like you.

like

Maybe stop asking for advice? Or not. Maybe ask for advice then complain anonymously about it. That'll fix it.

I think my kids are racists because they don't listen to anything I say either. Damn.

Maybe you aren't as great as you think you are at your job. For gods sake not everything is the white males fault. Why is it always that white males need to "check our privilege" 100% of the time? The world doesn't owe you shit. The same old regurgitated line is getting real tired. Cue the "you're a racist" or "sexist" in 3...2...1....

Errr dude you just assumed that because OP is a whiner with "shite ideas" bc not a white male. Perhaps rather than assume we think all white men are racist, you can think about WHY you make these assumptions especially considering how baseless they are (since you obviously can't know the OP). I've been up against said assumptions my entire life, (and thankfully 72 is a bright spot) and it is exhausting.

Interesting thread and some real frustrations. My perspective is charisma and the ability to influence people and decisions with personality and charm are key skills and don't in my opinion relate to sex or colour or age or anything else for that matter. Consider how you are developing those skills and building relationships and think about the impact on others in all you do and you will do well anywhere. If in doubt 'do the right thing' and be seen to be doing that consistently and all will be well.

DigitasLB1 3 I agree that those are absolutely great skills to have and use. If you can persevere organized bullying, disrespect, and being denied proper resources then yes you can win with such skills. However, when others are given the benefit of the doubt or flaws are ignored because their one of the good ole boys, it can be a bit demotivating.

A mentor of mine once mentioned that she really respected an SVP we were working with because she didn’t talk just to fill space, she only spoke up when she was adding value. I realize now that I internalized this in a big way and am wondering, years later and in a virtual world, if I’m doing myself a disservice by not ‘making my presence felt’ in zooms.
