Always tip housekeeping.
After a few years I learned from my first manager/mentor that she had started (as a single mom) in housekeeping working days and going to school at night.
Was one of the best consultants I’ve worked with.
For everyone not tipping, what argument do you have for tipping at a restaurant? The restaurant owner should be paying them enough, so i’m not going to tip? I’d hate to be your server.
I will say tipping housekeepers is less common, but some of your arguments against it are sad, if not pathetic.
there are jobs that receive lower than standard wages and are expected to make up their income with tips. The rest receive a wage that is supposed to support them, and i am not going to argue minimum wage, so the question is where do you stop? Should you tip the cashier at McDonalds or the guy that pumps your gas as they are in a low wage jobs as well?
No one
So should we subsidize everyone’s minimum wage? Im not from the US so I literally don’t know where tipping is *expected*, and end up googling it for many things. And my biggest issue 90% of the time is if I cant put it on the card, as I dont carry cash.
How dare you animals not tip housekeepers lmao
House keeping is the only one I tip, as I don't use bell hops. Usually leave a $5 or so on the pillow case per day.
This thread has shown me that some of the worst people work in consulting...how are you trying to justify being a trash person? Just say you don’t tip and keep it pushing. Stop trying to put the blame on housekeepers and other hotel employees for not being “paid enough”
Exactly A1. I'm one of them. I'm not tipping nobody.
I carry cash specifically so I can tip housekeeping, valet (in the rare chance I have a car), etc. I have no issue giving away $20+ a week to people breaking their back for me to have a pleasant stay. And in my experience they remember it and pay in forward in the little ways they can.
The bartender
No one, I always pick the green choice, so I don’t have housekeeping visit my room. And I don’t use bellhops or anything. The only one I would consider tipping is if I ordered room service and had it delivered to the room, but tip is normally included in that total bill.
that's the culture though, isn't it? you tip servers for just doing their basic job, right?
ALSO - tip every day, not just a lump sum on your way out.
in all likelihood, different people are cleaning your room every day. so leave a few bucks for each to ensure a fair distribution. :)
@pwc1 the thread topic is specifically related to the US
I have been advocating for hotels to include an option to tip their staff online. It will be very useful as most folks do not carry cash, however, I learned that if they do it online it will be taxed. Bummer.
Legally, tips are taxable
ITT: people with 6 figure salaries and Mon-Thu comped living trying to make a rational argument against a broken system to justify lack of empathy.
You're not changing the game by refusing to play. You're only making someone's day a little bit worse.
E7 , you don’t tip waiters ? I bet your friends and family notice. You sound like a cheapskate rationalizing donating $10k-$20k to charity but not 15 bucks to your server
Jeez, now I’m feeling bad. I use green choice but still didn’t realize tipping housekeeping was still a thing ! Feel like I cheated them out of $500 this year !
$5/night housekeeping, $5/valet or others as needed. I get cash just for this - not having it is not an excuse when you know you’re traveling. And for those of you that don’t tip, it tells me you lack empathy and imagination for what it’s like to earn minimum wage.
BCG3. Well said. Especially the empathy comment.
Housekeeping $3-5/ night depending on city - NYC 5, most others $3
Always. Always. Leave min of $2 a day in my room. The people who clean your room deserve that at likely more from everyone
Green choice / Do not disturb and zero tip. Despite hating the inconvenience of tipping in the US anywhere, I learned to live with it if I can leave it on the card. But I havent carried cash in 8 months and not willing to adapt
Typically top $20/ 3 nights stay as I leave on Thursday after green choice all week. It’s almost a gratitude moment for me for the life I have.
I always do green choice, so limited involvement but I also almost never carry cash. Annoying that there is no alternative. i.e. I tip the breakfast staff 30%
Zilch. I pick green choice and don’t leave my room like a mess so they’re doing their job. Honestly I agree with everyone not my job to tip them when I’m already paying 2-350 a night.
