I was surprised when I heard tips were so important in the states, in most of europe we pay our service workers a living wage so they don't have to survive based on tips
Crazy to me that we're all just collectively okay with this, it's literally just a way for business owners to underpay their workers
Yeah definitely a bit insane that customers have to subsidize the cost of running a restaurant for some completely arbitrary reason
I think that all employees in the restaurant industry should be paid a livable wage, and tips should be optional. This would make the industry more fair and equitable for everyone involved.
The tipping system is the worst. It is based on "if you work well you get more money" but in reality it depends on the good will of the person you served. Sometimes you serve in the best way a customer who spent over $200 on a meal and he doesn't leave you a pittance as a tip.
Definitely a bit messed up, I don't get why we can't just get paid a living wage AND get tips
Yeah I've always thought tips were supposed to be a little bonus for great service, not supplemental to our income. It puts so much pressure on customers to leave a tip
Our country has always survived on slave labor. It started with actual slaves, which kept the cost of cotton low and allowed us to undercut the international market. Today, we pay servers 2.13 an hour (zero after taxes) in order to keep costs to restaurants down, and we force customers to pay the wages by implementing a tip system (some do, some don’t ). We use undocumented immigrants as physical labor and pay them well below the market rate in order to keep food costs low. This is what our country was founded on. No one should be surprised, tho it does, absolutely, need an overhaul.
Yeah it's a bit scummy imo but in some places waiters get so many tips that their income can be upwards of $20/hr, which is significantly higher than what they would get at minimum wage so it's a give and take I suppose
It has needed an overhaul for a very, very long time. People have less spending money which means when they treat themselves, they are going to save where they can. Tips are optional so why not save a few dollars there? Leaving the staff without pay. The fact that this is legal is truly horrible. I've stopped eating at places that don't pay a living wage. I'm glad there is a growing number of ethical businesses that build tips into the food price and pay fairly. However, it shouldn't be on the ethical few, it's on the government to stop allowing this kind of employment.
