Who else in the U.S. doesn’t have today off?

Not that I’m a fan of Christopher Columbus, but a day off would have been nice. 😖

It should be a day off but as Indigenous People’s Day. Having said that, I am working 🙃

Working here in Houston. Not an official holiday, but office is more empty than usual for a Monday.

I didn’t even know it was a holiday today

Office is open, people with kids are not here (since schools are closed). Not a firm holiday

And now I have my answer as to why the office is empty today. I think my critical thinking skills have officially atrophied.

Patent pros here and definitely worked today despite the USPTO being closed.

We have off- but not for Columbus Day. Indigenous People’s Day. Much less icky.

I work for a local government in Virginia and we do not have the day off.

Houston, TX - everybody’s in the office. But yes - I feel ya. Would have liked to be off today.

Does any firm have today off? Not my firm

I forgot it wasn’t a firm holiday and took the day off. My firm doesn’t care though so I take time off whenever I want

When I was still in big law in NYC staff was off, but as we all know, lawyers—out more flexible schedules notwithstanding—are never really off.

Congratulations, you played yourself.

My firm doesn’t have it off but it’s because they swapped it for the day after Thanksgiving.

Hi, I’d really appreciate any advice. I was offered an in house position requiring a highly specialized area of law, which I have, but they offered 20k less than what the job posting originally said. Their rationale is I have less years of experience than they were looking for. Other candidates had more years of practicing experience but less experience with this industry so I beat them out. I want to negotiate for the original salary posted. Not sure if relevant but I’m a woman of color.

1st year corporate lawyer here at a regional firm in Canada — in a major city but likely not the first ones that’ll come to ppl’s mind. Department is experiencing a shortage of juniors, not hiring. Ppl say it’s great learning opportunity etc, but I can’t constantly do a 3rd year lawyer’s job. The firm has many great lawyers but some admin staff (including my assistant) are so incompetent and just make my job more difficult. Lateral may not happen any time soon and feel hopeless and trapped.

Advice please on if I should consider offers for Staff Attorney or Non-Partner track positions.

I have gotten a few calls from BL recruiters and mid-size firms recently asking if I would consider accepting a Staff Attorney or Non-Partner track position until they have a partner track position open up. So far I have turned them down out of concern I might get stuck in that role, but do any of you have advice on if I should reconsider this?
