Who has gone from a Big 4 to a mid-tier or regional firm? Or from a mid-tier/regional to a Big 4? How would you compare your experience between the two?

Went mid tier to B4. Based on my experience, mid tier the growth curve is a bit faster. There's less resources so staff really need to start technical areas sooner. There's not always the luxury of having them focus just on detail testing and coordinating GDM first year. I was writing technical memos, doing technical research and in-charging jobs my second year. Typically that's not gonna happen at B4 because of the size and scope of the clients. Moved to B4 at senior and I can tell you that B4 have significantly more resources. The clients are much larger and you deal with many issues that you simply won't find on smaller mid tier clients (coordinating global deliverables, true full blown SOX 404 audit done appropriately, etc...).

Went Big Four to mid-tier. I miss the structure and expertise of Big Four.

I work mid 50s to low 60s busy season right now so I'm pretty close to yours at the moment.

I should also add, I'm curious to know what each person has enjoyed more and whether they are happy with the switch they made.

I've gone from mid tier to B10. Technology is much better @ B10, with resources such as NTO, and better software. My mid tier boss was ex EY so had big clients but I feel he serviced them inadequately with a mid tier company. B10 is more professional and better trading too.

@CH 1 how do you define mid-tier? Because I would define Crowe as a mid-tier. Do you mind me asking which firm you came from? I came from a mid-tier to B4 but don't see a lot of difference when it comes to software. I would agree tho that B4 definitely has more resources to service the larger multinational clients.

Mid tier to B4 - learned more at smaller due to reasons SS1 said; I like B4 better - more structure, more specialty areas, less hours, more diverse crowd of people

B4 definitely better once pure further in on your career. I was on a large SOX engagement and the audit process is just so much more advanced than mid tier. Part of this is due to the size of the client, as they are very clean and have well staffed accounting departments that provide clean books. Also the national office resources set the B4 apart. They have hundreds of people who spend the entire year just researching PCAOB comments and designing audit plans to stay ahead of the curve. The mid tier just don't have the money to invest that much capital into national office and periphery functions.

That's not to say that my mid tier wasn't competent, they were and had extremely bright people. Just when comparing the two, I did notice that the B4 had significantly more resources to work with.

I disagree with SS1. What you experienced is purely depending on which office you're in. In a small office like mine I seniored jobs during busy season of my second year, tested all accounts by end of my first busy season as a staff etc.

@EY1, this is speaking in generalities. Obviously the answer is always "it depends". That's true for literally everything in life. But on the average the majority of B4 staff are not In-charging jobs or writing technical memos their second year.

Also those smaller markets are unlikely to have the SOX 404 clients that the large markets have. Small market B4 operates like a mid market mid tier, with the exception being they still have access to all the resources that the B4 offer.

@rsm1 Mid 50s during season. A couple 70- 80 hour weeks every once in a while, but at my regional it was a lot more 65-70 hour weeks for extended periods

I think the software capability is a lot better at B4 than mid tier

@RSM 1 are you in a large or small market?

SS1 I have been on public client exclusively so I am not sure what you stated is true. Smaller big 4 offices do not equal less public jobs.

^They absolutely equal less public jobs and they equal smaller public jobs. How many Fortune 500 clients in Milwaukee vs how many in NYC and SF?
