I have a couple retainer clients - each one has its own agreement with different scope of work and payment stipulations.
Client A has an annual spend cap: they brief me on a request when creative is needed, I outline how much it would cost, they approve that cost, and I execute the request. I continue to advise them of spend cap usage and they pick and choose which items to pursue as they get closer to the end of the year or using up their annual spend cap (whichever happens first)
For Client B, I log my hours and bill quarterly. They have a couple small requests each week but occasionally will have a larger ask that gets added to the mix. Here I also continue to advise them how we're looking on spend so that they can make informed decisions if a request is particularly cost-prohibitive.
Client C has an hourly commitment each month for a set rate. They get 20 hours of my time secured for them; I get paid regardless of if they use it all. In the interest of fostering our working relationship I don't bill them overtime if one month happens to go an hour or two over the hourly scope - combined with the months that they don't use all their allotted time it all evens out. If they do appear to be going substantially over time in a month, I try to advise them of this early on and bill out accordingly if they choose to proceed with the work.
Happy to help! Not saying this will work for everyone, but it's given me a fairly solid foundation over the last few years since I started my company.
If I'd known half of these things when I started professionally in 2009, I'd have a lot less grey hair now.
