Who here is on team COAST FIRE? (Google this term if you're unfamiliar). I've been unintentionally doing this without being aware that this was a type of FIRE. I think I'm only a few years away from from hitting my target, depending on what crypto does. Some details: Age: 32 Single Net worth: $470K Target Number: $1.8M ($60K annual expenses) Current Annual Savings: $40K minimum ($70K max) Just switched jobs (no longer at EY) and hoping to do plenty of traveling over the next few years!

I’m 34, also single, with similar goals though a bit behind you (divorce does that to you lol). I like the flexibility that it affords. Now I’m looking for about 2 mill. But that could change depending on if there’s a wife#2 and what she does. If there are kids, etc. But knowing that I’ll be “set” with 2 mill no mater what I do will let me sleep at night.

I have a relatively low cost basis in Crypto so losing everything wouldn't set me back too much. Only debt is student debt which is only a little below $14K which I'm at no rush to pay off due to 2% interest rate. Main goal is buy a duplex/home and have it fully paid off by the time I decide to retire early if I decide to. Obviously this could all change in a flash because we don't know the furure, but so far I'm on a solid path going forward. How about everyone else? Is there any who has a family with dual incomes and has the opportunity to coast FIRE due to diligent saving before having kids?

Wasn’t familiar with the term, and just done some googling. In theory, I’m already there, $800k+ net worth at 36. I would just be really worry about the rate of return on the investment everyday that I won’t be able to coasts 😅

SM1, I’ve been struggling with the same debate in the last few years. Supposedly I will be up for partner next year. In theory, I can work half the hours to make MD, continue to build my net worth and retire comfortably when I turn 50. There is no logical reason why I should continue work the hours I work now to make partner and have to deal with all the stress come with the sale targets.

Just googled as well. Very scary to me. I do real estate and crypto and obviously stocks. All of those can fluctuate greatly. I have days I make 100k or lose 100k. If I’m not continuously saving that sacred me a bit. The premise here is you don’t touch investments and any market impact can recover over a long period of 35 years. Still a long time to be gambling.

I think that ideally you would begin reallocating your investments much earlier than you would if you were aiming to retire at 65. As you're approaching that target number you would re-allocate out from stocks & for the existing holdings, change from being more growth focused to maybe long term dividend paying, mature companies in order to protect your assets. Most of time when I'm doing these estimates, I'm either conservative on my crypto estimates or I just don't include it at all. Crypto is just I'm using to potentially help boost me higher up to hitting coastfire. If I was to consider crypto more, I would probably need to change my overall return from 7% to 25% over the next few years lol...

Strategy folks - how do you get good at … strategy? Recently started at a startup in a role where I’m the only person under the head of our product team who handles the strategy-focus of the company. He wants me to take more ownership from him and I want to crush it but have no relevant experience here and am still fairly junior. Any books or classes? Or is it just trial by fire.
