Equivalent by definition makes the same...
At some firms, Associates are paid less than BAs - and it’s exactly because of situations like this.
If being paid the same was what made different roles equivalent, we would be sharing our pay grade on LinkedIn, not our titles
What do you mean by equivalent? Not everyone who is a consulting partner would have succeeded in industry and vice-versa. From a very high level point of view, consulting partners make a bit more unless they are in a sales leadership role in the industry. The closer you are to sales the more money you make.
It depends. A lot of senior execs in industry get RSUs, stock, or options that can be worth a lot more than what a consulting partner makes if the company does well.
Also it’s a very different job for a corporate exec running a multi billion dollar BU with thousands or tens of thousands of employees vs a consulting partner running a couple teams with a dozen people or even a large unit with hundreds of people and a few hundred consulting staff
Lol partners at our firm make more than individuals with similar tenures in industry, by far. (Equivalence between roles based on years experience)
I work for Fortune 10. I know many VP’s in their 30s making $225-250k base but bonuses are budgeted at $600k. Plus options. Most work 8-5.
Depends what your valuation on having a life outside of work is
A little perspective here - I’m 15 years post MBA. My classmates who are making the most right now are NOT consulting firm partners. Outside of the finance people, the highest earners / net worth folks are the ones who:
1. (most common) got in to a successful tech company relatively early or at a senior level and rode the equity wave (pre or post IPO)
2. got to a high level at decent sized companies relatively quickly and benefitted from a rising stock price
3. (less common) held senior exec roles at PE portfolio companies and made $$$ when the company was sold, especially if they’ve done this more than once
A junior partner in consulting probably makes more than the median MBA with the same tenure in industry BUT there’s a lot more upside in certain industry roles. In other words, the ceiling is lower in consulting. I know senior execs (in “boring” industries not just tech) sitting on $100M+ in options / equity. And plenty of people who went to start ups and made bank
