Sounds like you're seniors are trying to help you out. A lot of new associates don't ask enough questions though this is the time to ask them. I would try and work on your social anxiety as most people talk their way through this job.
Dude! I have monster anxiety too! And same feels. I refuse to take meds but I run 2-3x a week ( hate it btw) but that helps me tremendously. I also read to help myself fall asleep. In spite of anxiety and all, I get great reviews and I actually get a shitton more work done than my colleagues ( you will reliable this more as you manage new associates and interns). It would take usually several bad reviews and your failure to improve on an HR performance plan to get fired usually. Just breathe! Do the best you can! And this is golden - #fakeittilyoumakeit!!! You got this!
OP... I felt the same way as you my first year and got told a lot of the same things. It helped me once I was there for a little while and got to know my coworkers a little better. Also talking to the client as much as possible and offering to do random things to help your seniors out goes a long way. I would say you're probably fine though.
@ey1- as a fairly new associate, i feel like my team members may not think that good of me because I'm very quiet and don't really build rapport ( i was told in my perf. reviews- i have mild social anxiety) and often times when working on a task, i feel like most of my seniors micromanage me ( as in telling me i have to work faster or i have to ask more questions/speak up more ). Maybe I am just paranoid... but ever since my coworker, who used to sit right next to me, was let go recently i feel like i'm next in line for some reason... I get anxiety regarding this almost every night before the next work day and get sleepless....
Talk their way through means people just talk to managers and above so people like them. Also, talking to the client a lot helps. No one is going to fire someone they've had several good conversations with. Much easier for people to let you go if they barely know your name.
If you're concerned about being laid off and you have a diagnosis consider telling them. They'll be more hesitant to fire you if you have a medical condition affecting your performance.
don't suck up, when I see people sucking up its very obvious ... if people can rise up the chain they are smart enough to know who is ass kissing... focus on doing a good job and have good relationships with everyone ...
Partners have final say, but they would have to go through HR. They would also need to have cause or reason for it. You think you're endangered of getting fired?
The partners of my group.
@ey1- what do u mean as in "talk their way through"?
I agree with EY 1. Usually the managers expect to have a discussion about what I'm doing on a job before I do it, then as the staff and I do the work, the staff and I discuss how it needs to be done. As questions pop into my head, I say them aloud.
OP, did you walk away from your performance review with any action items concerning team (relationship) building? I presume your coach would have recommended a few since he/she mentioned this issue during your review. Hopefully you've made some progress building rapport with your team. If not, it's not a deal breaker and you shouldn't be too worried about job security as long as you're producing quality work.
