Why am I doing work at 10:21 PM when I could be watching Vikings? Is it because I never got over my private practice need to please and fear of follow-up emails from clients?

Bro you’re in-house. Respond two days later and make them feel lucky to get a response that quickly.

Work like you’re in big law while in house if they are paying you like big law. Otherwise, don’t.

This response deserves a standing ovation

Has anyone come up with a gracious way to tell existing or prior clients that you are too busy to take on more of their work? I am in a mid-sized law firm in Florida and drowning in work. Moved to industry and noticed my boss has been dumping all of their work, meetings on me and blocking calendar for personal time. How do you manage this? I have been overwhelmed since I joined past 2 months. They are nice and supportive it’s just that the minute I complete one task they start pushing more and more to me with no breather in between. Some items that they owned before I joined are also something I have to ramp up on.

Does anyone have a boss or leader that nitpicks at everything you do, and also doesn’t recognize your work? Do they tend to have favorites? I started at this company fairly recently, as well as some members of my team. None of us has even been in the company for 4 months yet and we all want to leave because of our leadership team. I’m hesitant to look elsewhere since it “shows that I don’t stay at the company long,” but my goodness we are going insane!

I am the only immigrant with an accent in my office and it’s almost a daily thing now that my bosses/coworkers would explain terms to me that I already know. Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

I’m currently a 4th year Private Equity/M&A lawyer applying for jobs in-house. I’ve been asked by a potential employer to provide a “contract I’ve drafted” with confidential information redacted but it seems wrong to pull a contract from my firm and the client to send to another organization for personal use (as purchase agreements are a labor of love from multiple parties). Has anyone else been asked to provide contracts to potential employers? Are there alternatives?

Have you had to change your start date after accepting an offer and how did it go? I told them I need to give 30 day notice and so I set my start date (incorrectly) assuming the background check and drug screen would take a few days to clear. However, the drug screen is now taking over a week and a half (still not finished, maybe tomorrow). Apparently things are much slower due to staffing issues and labs are backed up. It’s cutting into my 30 day notice significantly. Thoughts?

Should you always negotiate salary? I told an employer what my salary range was and they offered the top range in the first round of negotiations? My total comp would be an additional 25% on top of salary. I’m elated about the offer but I’m concerned they’ll have doubts about me moving into a contract negotiation role if I don’t negotiate. Is this a valid concern or am I over thinking it?

For those working in house, how much “from scratch” document drafting are you doing vs. reviewing and revising “outside documents”. Or are you getting outside counsel to do it?
