Why are Asians being excluded from diversity programs of almost every large companies in the US despite them being in the minority category?

💯 concur. I feel like this more pertains to East Asian American men in my opinion. I think Asian Americans that pass as middle eastern are better treated due to the fear of stigmatizing them from a racial perspective on account of Trump and subsequently the US relations with the middle east. I have no social equity oriented grievance that I can tout. If you're an Asian American woman you can bank off of being a woman regardless of whether that is patronizing or not. There's a projection of grievances against white male privilege and an attempt to disarm it that will never work, but has the unintended consequence of effecting me as an Asian male. My parents were immigrants and I grew up working class, but people automatically assume I'm some sort of upper class and that it was automatically given to me because "Americans were less racist to Asians than black people". Even if that's true this identification and blatant assumption distorts that predominantly the issue in America is more class based than race based.

What? You do realize that Microsoft’s and Google’s CEOs are of Indian descent and not Middle Eastern right? Most people who know the difference don’t treat Indians/South Asians any differently because of relations with the Middle East, it’s literally a non factor

Socio-economically Asians are pretty much nailing it, we can thank our tiger moms (or if you’re Indian - our Bengal Tiger moms) / there are caps on Asians and Indians being accepted to Harvard (& sigh... lower- tier “other” Ivy leagues) people don’t care as much about the racist issues you’re going through. This also explains why Indians and Asians are called “model minorities” - we are apparently to be emulated by Blacks and Hispanics. But have you ever seen an Indian try to play a sport? Unless it’s cricket it’s not so great. Ok tennis and golf too. Anyway - that’s your answer. I truly believe an Indian version of Get Out would be white people stealing our brains so they could win more spelling bees. PS: This is why Mindy Kaling’s brother lied and pretended to be a “brotha” AKA black male applicant so he could get accepted into medical schools (and his racist plan worked! The requisites for grades and scores are lower for black applicants than Indian students and he had his pick of the litter with his grades!) - he cut his eyelashes and shaved his head. Please look it up.

I think it’s best described as being a victim of your own success. On average, Asian cultures place heavy importance on education (regardless of your economic circumstances) so you get a batch of Asians pursuing colleges and mid + class careers. Consequently, this influx resulted in an over representation of Asians in colleges and lower to mid level management. This recent burst has left a bitter taste as Asians are now grouped/defined a privileged class when in reality they don’t benefit from the “white” privileges that they’re grouped into. Because of this Asians are now excluded from basically every diversity program. It’s sad cause there are a lot of socioeconomic factors to consider (particularly wealth class) but it is what it is.

Asians are accepted in Corporate America. African Americans are not. Look at the statistics across the top tech companies and consulting firms.

Women are under represented in online video games. Look at the statistics, many more men are playing video games than girls. So we should make the PS5 and Xbox more expensive for men to buy than women.

You are forgetting that we are not minorities when it comes to diversity. We are only minorities when it’s time for the white privilege payouts.

Im not implying that, ur reading into it. But we do have CULTURAL differences and historical differences from other groups, which are factors in us not facing hardships like other minorities here generally. So why not focus on helping other minorities instead?

Arrow Icon

I think Asians are well represented in entry, mid- management level, however, as we move on in our career, we don’t see as many Asian leaders/role models as we reach the “bamboo ceiling”. Asian women are also the least likely race/gender combination to get promoted in the U.S.

I didn’t say lumping them altogether is appropriate but it’s a fact of life. Programs are developed to assist underrepresented minorities. A sub population is not going to get attention.

D1 lol so Asians are more American than white people then. But yes I’ve heard that before, dunno how true it is

Honestly, I feel like it’s because they never really speak up. Latinos, and African Americans do a very good job of drawing awareness and advocating for themselves, and I just haven’t seen that same effort from Asian Americans. No doubt they have their own share of issues that they face but no one truly knows much about it or how to help.

Lol, its cultural. A lot of asian cultures speak up only with alcohol or behind ppls backs. we mad polite up front, but behind the scene—we going off. A lot of it is also maintaining an image

I think we Asians are generally perceived as hard workers and don’t make any trouble, so we are more accepted by corporate america. I can’t speak for other firms, but my last employer (JPM) and current employer all have diversity programs that do included Asians.

OP I assume you are not Asian, in simple terms all minorities experience systemic racism differently. Black parents have the “talk” with their kids about how driving a nice car will get you shot by the police. Asian parents have the “talk” wi the their kids about how in this country they need to always be much better than a white person to achieve the same results as them. No politicians will ever admit it or help Asians because it serves them no political benefits to do so. It’s just the country we live in and there is nothing we can do about it.

I am so sad on my project right now. There’s so much bureaucracy and I’m stressed all the time. My client is a handful and everyday my program manager has to baby him so he doesn’t throw a fit. I feel so depressed and hopeless because I know I’ll be on this project for the foreseeable future. I’ve only been on it for 2 months - so prob too early to switch anyways. I know I should be grateful to be working and making money but I need advice on not getting too down or depressed about work. Advice?
