Been at Alphabet my entire career post-undergrad. Managed to move from Google to a well-respected Bet where I’m very happy. Undergrad was a pretty general liberal arts degree and haven’t pursued grad school yet.
What would it look like (from a TC + long term career standpoint) to switch over to MBB for a year or two then go back to FAANG?

The finances are different between IB and Consulting.
Consulting: firms are paid based on hours, so you want to hire the best consultants at your price value.
IB: firms are paid based on a % of the deal value.
Someone can probably explain it better than me but I think this is probably the main reason why
I would say you’re both incorrect and that BCG2 is correct. Brand as a proxy to determine quality is critical when quality can’t be measured. It does pose the interesting question of will this dynamic change as adoption of performance based contracts accelerates.

Boutique banks often pay more. Ibd fees are often similar across banks (less price competition than consulting?), but smaller banks have less overhead and no other units to prop up. (For example, at a mega bank, ibd profits could be used to compensate for weakness in, say, residential mortgages.) This allows them to pay more and get better talent at junior and senior levels, which allows them to compete.
Quality is more intangible in consulting therefore prestige and your ability to leverage previous experience is key in selling. There is not only a brand but a scale barrier
