In big agency world ideas tend to start with commercials and prints tend to be derivatives. Having spec commercials that are good naturally shows the potential and makes it easier to hire.
I’m shocked nobody is stating the obvious here. Agencies overwork their staff, so on-the-job mentorship is mostly dead. As a result, a junior with produced spec TVCs is going to seem more ready than someone who has no TV experience.
