NJ wished to be #1 in something.
Genie granted them their wish.
And voila! Numero 1 in real estate tax rate
The Republican party in NJ for a long time was very in favor of these high taxes at the local level
1. Keeps out the “rif raf”
2. Schools = property value
3. Invests in their children too
4. Local government is empowered
I moved out a few years ago but growing up near South NJ, this was bi-partisan
There is some truth to the conservative moniker about high tax states, but the conventional wisdom isn’t always the reality. If you look into it, states basically pay the education, roads, public safety etc. bills using a combination of sales, property and income taxes. Some states (TX, FL) like to tout their low income taxes, but you get hosed on property and sales taxes (and the nickel and dimed on things like toll roads). In reality, the “low tax” states typically get the same amount of money somehow from citizens bc the costs aren’t that different. Then there are states like NJ and I’d say IL where you get hosed at every level bc state government really is bloated.
Correct. Having lived in both, IL is the only state that’s objectively worse than NJ
Because you live in the wrong state and your politicians suck yet you keep voting them in
Thanks libs
NJ is the worst which is why I’m plotting a move to CT
It is but you can live walking distance to the train and it isn’t as delayed as Nj transit and LIRR
Public sector pension obligations
NJ is a commuter state, similar CT. Most of the people live in NJ but their income/employer taxes are going to other states. Revenue has to come from somewhere to support infrastructure. It’s also a very wealthy state, Top 2.

Must be nice to have options lol my communuity is 4 models all about same price different layouts lkl
They have always been high but now it is more pronounced with the inability to deduct that there previously had been.
Schools, roads and patks are good and the beaches are well taken care of. But you pay a ridiculous amount relative to other places.
At least income tax is still relatively low. You have to look at overall tax burden. In any case NYC still the most expensive place to be with overall tax burden. https://wallethub.com/edu/states-with-highest-lowest-tax-burden/20494/
Because every tiny town has its own government, school board, public works department, etc. NJ needs massive consolidation of these services. In addition, public pension obligations are out of control.
